Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust We create awareness, educate, engage and offer support to those suffering from leukaemia and other blood cancers.

“Anyone can be a hero”

Since being established in 2015, KKLT has sought to engage with BAME (black & minority ethnic communities to raise awareness of Leukaemia, educate and inform the community about Stem Cell Donation (commonly known as bone marrow donation), and encourage individuals to join the stem cell registry. Our aim is to increase the number of potential stem cell donors in the registry thus increasing BME com

munity’s survival rates. We have done this through delivering presentations, distributing information leaflets, use of social media, organising events, seeking speaking opportunities in various BAME community gatherings, and partnering with places of worship to talk and holding registration drives. More recently we have started to expand our services to include the distribution of food parcels and provide emotional and physical support to people with blood cancers and their families, thus reducing their isolation/loneliness and increasing their emotional and mental well-being.

Today is World Leukaemia Day 🧡observed every year on 4 September to raise awareness of leukaemia, support people affected by the disease, and highlight the importance of research, early recognition and access to treatment.

This World Leukaemia Day, let's make leukaemia impossible to ignore. Awareness can lead to earlier conversations, greater support and, ultimately, better outcomes for people affected by this disease.

Blood cancer is often less talked about than cancers such as breast or lung cancer, yet there are more than 100 different types of blood cancer.

The three most commonly recognised are leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma - but each can affect the body differently and may require different approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

One of the challenges is that many symptoms can easily be mistaken for something less serious. These symptoms can have many different causes, but recognising persistent or unusual changes and seeking medical advice is important.

To help people better understand blood cancer, we have created a guide covering the main types of blood cancer, possible symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

This week on EastEnders, Denise Fox’s battle with leukaemia took a devastating turn. With her family unable to provide a suitable match, doctors turned to the stem cell register to find a donor who could give her a chance of survival.

Denise’s story highlights a very real inequality: people from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely to find a well-matched stem cell donor due to underrepresentation and are more likely to have rare or unique tissue types, making it harder to find a suitable unrelated donor.

This is why diversity on the stem cell register matters. Someone who joins today could one day be the match that gives a person and their family another chance at life.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, Canadian Blood Services and NHS Blood and Transplant are joining forces to encourage more people to become blood donors.

Blood supplies are under growing pressure around the world. Extreme weather, seasonal illnesses and increasing demand for blood transfusions and plasma medicines are placing additional strain on blood services, with supplies in some countries falling by as much as 30%.

If you’ve ever considered becoming a blood donor, now is the time to take that step.

Fatigue can be more than simply feeling tired. With leukaemia, one may experience a persistent lack of energy that doesn’t improve with sleep or rest and can feel very different from your usual tiredness.

Leukaemia can cause fatigue because the disease can affect the production of healthy blood cells, including red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia. This may leave you feeling unusually weak, drained or short of breath, even after everyday activities.

Fatigue can have many causes, but if you’re experiencing **unusual or persistent tiredness**, particularly alongside other symptoms such as unexplained bruising or bleeding, frequent infections, fever, weight loss or breathlessness, speak to your GP.

**Don’t ignore changes that feel unusual for you.**
