💙 Protect yourself against Meningitis B – are you eligible for the vaccine?

Hi, I’m Lynne, Matron and Clinical Lead for the Immunisation Service at Swansea Bay University Health Board.

This summer, we are offering the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine as part of a time-limited catch-up programme to help protect eligible young people against meningococcal group B disease.

Meningococcal group B bacteria can cause serious illness, including meningitis and septicaemia. Although rare, these infections can develop quickly, which is why vaccination is an important way to protect yourself.

✅ You are eligible if:
➡️ You were born between 01/09/2007 and 31/08/2008 (aged 17 and 18). You will receive a letter inviting you for your MenB vaccination.

OR

➡️ You are under 25 years old (born on or after 21/07/2001), and you are starting undergraduate higher education or residential further education for the first time in Autumn 2026. • Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st July - Cafe 73, Neath Port Talbot College, Dwr Y Felin Road Caewern Neath Neath Port Talbot SA10 7RF. 9:15am - 4:45pm.

• Wednesday 22nd - Friday 24th July - Aberafan Local Vaccination Centre, Aberafan Shopping Centre, Unit 30D East Mall, Port Talbot, SA13 1PB. 9:15am - 4:45pm.

• Monday 27th – Friday 31st July - Bistro Area in LC2, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3ST. 9:15am - 4:45pm.

• Monday 3rd – Friday 7th August - - Bistro Area in LC2, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3ST. 9:15am - 4:45pm.

The MenB vaccine is given in 2 doses, at least 4 weeks apart. You need 2 doses of the vaccine to get the highest level of protection, it takes 2 weeks following the second dose to reach this level.

Some people may experience a sore arm, headache, mild fever or muscle aches after vaccination. These effects are usually short-lived and should not stop you from attending for your second dose.
