The Menopause Care team are thrilled to see that PCOS is officially being renamed as PMOS.
PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome – a name that much more accurately reflects what this condition actually is.
Despite the term “polycystic o***y syndrome”, women with PCOS do not have ovarian cysts.
For years, this misunderstanding has caused huge confusion around diagnosis, treatment and awareness.
This name change follows more than a decade of research, advocacy and global collaboration involving women with lived experience, healthcare professionals and patient organisations.
A more accurate name may help:
❤️ improve awareness and understanding
❤️ reduce stigma and misinformation
❤️ support earlier diagnosis
❤️ improve research and funding
❤️ help women feel more seen and understood
There will now be a 3-year transition period where both PCOS and PMOS are used together.
The condition itself has not changed, but hopefully the understanding around it finally will 🥰
