If spring teaches us to open, autumn teaches us to let go. We welcome the move from winter into spring, but the shift from summer into autumn can feel more challenging. Robert Frost’s Nothing Gold Can Stay acknowledges the sense of loss that can come with nature’s transition, but also reminds us that change is part of the cycle of life and gives us the chance to appreciate each season while it’s here.

"My husband and I have been attending Hatha Yoga classes with Olivia at the Spectrum Wellness Fitness Centre on Fernwood. The classes are always tailored to all the attendees needs and we have both noticed a huge improvement in our core muscle strength and balance. We are both in our sixties and this is really important to our overall health and wellbeing. We always leave the class beautifully relaxed, calm and with our muscles stretched and moving far better than when we arrived. I can not recommend Olivia's Yoga classes to you highly enough. She is an incredible teacher and an inspiration to us both".

I’ve been thinking about the words we use to describe ourselves.

I often use the term “older adults” when I talk about who my yoga classes are for, but I know that this phrase can mean different things to different people.

Age is a funny thing. We all know the number on our birth certificate, but that doesn’t always reflect how we feel, how we move or what we’re capable of.

In my classes, I’ve met people of all different ages and backgrounds. What connects them isn’t a number, it’s a shared desire for a slower, more mindful approach to yoga.

In this blog, I share why I use the term “older adults”, what I mean by it and why I don’t believe age should define what is possible for you.

Many of the older adults I meet are interested in yoga but don't necessarily want to walk into a room full of strangers and feel self-conscious.

That's often where private sessions can be helpful.

Instead of arriving at a class and trying to follow along, we start with you. Before we even meet, you'll complete a short questionnaire so I can get a sense of what you're hoping for and what's going on in your life right now.

From there, each session unfolds differently. Some days that might mean a little more movement and other days it might mean slowing right down. We might explore breathing practices, mindfulness or spend time talking about aspects of yoga that go beyond the physical practice.

We always finish with relaxation!

Private sessions aren't a "better" way to practice yoga than a class, they're simply a different way of working.
