I LOVE MY KID’S PLAYING SPORTS… BUT…!

As the football and tennis season kicks in again ( excuse the pun!) this quote from “Baseball Aholic” really rings true!

This 100% describes our household at times, and so many of our friends and parents who have children playing various sports in numerous locations on different days…

DRINK AND SNACKS AT THE READY!

The kids are back at school ( most of them, anyway) and over the years, I have tried a whole host of different things when they walk in through the door after school! Many attempts at instant conversation or engagement have resulted in a grunt or “I dunno!”

Here are My top 3 tips to make your child feel special when they walk in from school are;

1. Give your child your full attention - stop doing what you are doing, put your phone down - even if it’s just for a few seconds.

2. Say “ Hi!” With a warm smile and make eye contact.

3. Offer a drink 🥤 and snacks first … before you ask them in-depth questions about how their day went.

These are not a one-size-fits-all approach, but certainly have worked the best for our 3 kids!

CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

The latest figures from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) show a rise of 36% for children aged 6 - 17 attending A & E in England for mental health crises between 2019 - 2025.

Read this again!

These figures are alarming!

I know from my own experiences with my children in A & E ( and there have been many over the years! ) that A & E is not a fun place to be … and especially not for a young person in a state of distress mentally.

I am sure that there are many, many reasons for this, and mental health support can be difficult to access- I know that CAMHS are overwhelmed and waiting lists are long, access to GP and frontline services can be difficult , support in schools can be variable, and sometimes parents and families struggle to know where to go for help.

In my experience, working in the NHS in mental health for 20 years and subsequently as an Anxiety Management Coach, anxiety and depression tend to start with the small things… tummy aches, headaches, wanting to stay at home, not wanting to go to school, worrying about friends or homework…

… which when left unchecked grow bigger and bigger until people reach a crisis point.

One of the things that I love about my job is working with someone - adults and young people - and sharing coping skills and strategies that they can learn and use.

A powerful, effective toolkit that works for them every day to help them become “Unshrinkable” in the face of life’s challenges.

ENCOURAGING INDEPENDENCE CAN BE SO FRUSTRATING!

Conversation with my daughter back at the car after football training… where she was chatting with 2 of her friends.

“Mum… did you pick up my football top?

Me: “ No! It’s your football top, not mine!”

“Oh… ok!”

Her friend ( bless her) offered to walk back to the training ground to get it.

Frustrating… yes!

Encouraging independence and personal responsibility… hopefully 🤞!

Have you got any similar examples where it would have been easier to have done the job yourself, but you want to encourage your child to become more independent and responsible?

BANK HOLIDAY BLUES!

There is so much I wanted to do this Bank Holiday , so many places I wanted to visit with my family, and outdoor events that looked interesting.

However… the weather seemed to know that it is Bank Holiday too… and to say the rain has been torrential for much of the weekend is putting it mildly!

The dreadful weather has certainly scuppered some of my plans!

I am aware of many friends who have braved the elements, gone to festivals and outdoor events and although they been thoroughly drenched they have enjoyed themselves.

In contrast I read about Big Church Festival which was cancelled after a big sign was blown over in freak winds tragically killing 1 person and injuring several others.

It has made me realise that weather is not the most important thing.

“OOPS … I THINK I BROKE IT!”

A few weeks ago we bought a second- hand cross trainer to help with fitness.

Today I finally got round to using it … and if I’m honest it was harder than I realised!

I had set up a program that was way too hard and I briefly stopped for a drink of water… and then disaster… the screen went black!

It wouldn’t start up again… nothing!

“Oops… I’ve broken it!”

I tried several times to re-start the machine… still a black screen!

I wasn’t relishing the thought of telling my husband I had broken the cross- trainer the very first time I had used it!

Then I realised I needed to change my mindset … from “disaster mode” into “problem-solving mode.”

The upshot was that the cross-trainer wasn’t the problem , the very old extension lead was!

This got me thinking …

- sometimes you need to switch your mindset from “disaster mode” to “ problem- solving mode” and try to logically look at solutions.

- sometimes the actual problem is different to what we first thought!

BREAK IT DOWN !

Following the session on Thursday at the Connects network group, I had some really interesting feedback…

That it was useful to be reminded that you don’t have to complete every task all in one go…!

I use a Terry’s Chocolate Orange 🍊 to demonstrate this principle!

You would probably struggle to eat a whole chocolate orange all in one go … but you could definitely get through it one chunk at a time and share it round too!

 - Breaking a big task down into small manageable chunks means that you can get it done!

… by viewing a huge task in a different way the feelings of overwhelm and not knowing where to start diminish…

So next time you have a huge daunting task that you feel you can’t complete… give this a try :-

- Break it down into smaller, manageable components,

- Start with one chunk at a time!

- Share the smaller tasks and delegate to other people!

- Notice and celebrate each task you achieve.

- Be proud that have achieved a task that you thought was beyond your limits!

I would love to know how you have got on!
