🚨 Regulatory Alert: EU Consultation on Botanicals & MPLs 🌿
Our profession is currently facing potential regulatory changes regarding two interconnected pieces of European legislation that could impact access to herbs and herbal products:
1️⃣ Maximum Permitted Levels (MPLs) for Vitamins & Minerals: Proposed EU-wide limits risks reducing doses of key nutrients (like Vitamin D, B vitamins, and Magnesium) so low that they lose clinical effectiveness.
2️⃣ New Restrictions on Botanicals: A priority list of 13 key substances - including Ashwagandha, Curcumin, St John’s Wort - is currently under review.
The National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) supports proportionate, evidence-based regulation. However, we oppose restrictions based on single-constituent toxicology that fail to account for the distinct pharmacology of whole-herb preparations.
📍 Impact on Northern Ireland: Under the Windsor Framework, any new EU restrictions will automatically apply in Northern Ireland.
NIMH will be submitting a formal response to the imminent consultation on this topic, and coordinating across professional registers to protect access to herbal medicine and ensure regulation matches the evidence.

Quick fixes or long-term herbal treatment.

It is easy to get seduced by a new supplement or wonder herb that will solve how you are feeling. I get caught up in the hype of these a lot, and then spend hours on pub med researching the evidence.

I often say herbal medicine isn’t a quick fix, it’s a longer-term plan to help your body get back into balance. Yes, we work with your symptoms but we also delve a bit deeper and investigate what’s causing those symptoms. This is how herbal medicine differs from quick fixes.

But I also help in more acute situations, with drop doses for calming nerves, panic or anxiety. Mood and immune support through winter. Support for helping you through a minor injury or illness. Support for big life events or grief. You don’t have to have a medical condition to see a herbalist.
I'm Rebecca - medical herbalist at wellbeing with herbs.

Please get in touch if you have questions.

Hawthorn berries (Crataegus spp.) in the hedgerows. Always check your plant ID . Used in herbal medicine, when appropriate as a cardiovascular tonic.

Before taking hawthorn, always see a qualified medical herbalist who can check for interactions with any medicine you are taking.

Medical herbalists ask, "what does this patient need?" not "what herbs support the heart?"
