WHY DO HARD THINGS?

Every runner knows the feeling.

The early alarm.
The freezing rain.
The long run when your legs are already tired.
The race that scares you because you’re not sure you can finish.

So why do it?

Because doing hard things changes more than your fitness.

✅ You build resilience.

Every challenge you overcome becomes tangible evidence that you’re capable of more than you thought.

✅ You develop confidence.

Confidence isn’t something you find. It’s something you earn and grow through action.

✅ You expand your comfort zone.

The things that feel impossible today become normal tomorrow when you keep showing up time and time again. Novelty becomes habit.

✅ You learn who you really are.

When things get tough, excuses disappear and character is revealed.

✅ You become stronger in life, not just running.

The discipline, patience and perseverance you develop on the trails and roads carry into work, family and everyday challenges.

The goal isn’t to make life harder.

The goal is to become stronger by choosing challenges that help you grow.

Whether it’s your first 10k, a marathon PB, or an ultramarathon you’ve been dreaming about for years:

Set a challenge.
Embrace the discomfort.
Discover what you’re capable of.

Because the person you become along the way is worth more than the finish line.

What hard thing are you currently working towards?

The truth about improving as a runner?

It’s boring.

Not the race day photos.
Not the finish lines.
Not the shiny new gear.

The improvement itself.

It’s the same easy run you’ve done hundreds of times.
The strength session you’d rather skip.
The early alarm when motivation is low.
The easy recovery run that feels too slow to matter.

Most runners are searching for the secret session, the magic plan, the hack, or the breakthrough workout.

But progress rarely arrives with fireworks. It arrives quietly. In the runner who keeps showing up when nobody is watching. In the athlete who repeats the basics long after the excitement has faded. In the person who understands that consistency beats intensity over the long term.

The work that transforms you is usually the work that feels unremarkable.

And that’s why most people avoid it.

They want improvement without repetition.
Results without patience.
Growth without boredom.

But endurance isn’t built through occasional heroic efforts.

It’s built through thousands of ordinary miles stacked on top of each other.

The runners who improve the most aren’t always the most talented.

They’re often the ones willing to embrace the monotony.

Can you stay committed when training becomes routine?

Because that’s where progress lives.

🏃‍♂️ What’s the most boring part of training that has made the biggest difference to your running?

In my early running days, I used to think every run had to prove something.

Faster. Harder. More tired.

If I didn’t finish exhausted… did it even count?

But that mindset is exactly what holds a lot of runners back.

Progress doesn’t come from smashing every session. It comes from running at the right effort, on the right day.

That’s where pacing zones come in:

Easy days — feel almost too slow (that’s the point)
Aerobic runs — build the engine that carries you further
Steady efforts — controlled, not chaotic
Threshold — uncomfortable, but sustainable
Speed — short, sharp, and purposeful

The lesson?

Stop trying to win every run. Start training with intention.

That’s when things click. That’s when you actually improve.

And ironically… that’s when running starts to feel easier.

Save this for your next run and check yourself:
Are you running the pace you need… or the pace your ego wants?

A great result for Pam after a few months of setbacks.

I’ll admit, I thought it was a big ask to try and get a sub 2 hour half marathon time, given the injury problems and faced with a tough course with a large section on sand in winter conditions, but underestimate this lady at your peril!

A solid block of training and a gradual build up through the distances at the Foxtrail series saw her surpass all expectations at her A race. She absolutely deserves it for all the work she’s put in to both the physical and mental side of training and working incredibly hard to get back into running postpartum.

I’m excited to hear what’s next for her…

Great start to the series for

Juggling a busy family life with 4 boys as well as running her own business, Pamela is a great example of what can be achieved from having structure, routine and a great work ethic. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be progress.

Looking forward to the next race!

The change of season can present different challenges for runners. The shorter days leave less time for long runs before or after work and the lower temperatures make the thought of lacing up a little less appealing.

So how do we maintain our good habits when the seasons shift?
