We're excited to share that Mavis Technologies will be exhibiting at Sight Village North Wales! πŸŽ‰

Join us on Tuesday 22nd September, 9am–3pm, at The Arena, Venue Cymru, Llandudno.

Come and try our AI smart glasses, VIARO and ITERO, for yourself β€” they read text aloud, help detect obstacles, guide you where you're going, and connect you to a real person for support, all without needing a smartphone. We'll also have our brand new charging cases on show.

Our team will be there all day for live demos and a chat, and entry is completely free β€” so bring a friend and come say hello!

What actually is the Mavis Support Centre, and why is it part of a subscription?

We get asked this a lot, so here is a proper answer.

The AI in our glasses handles most of the day: reading, obstacles, navigation, describing what's in front of you. But there are moments when AI is not enough. A form that needs a judgement call. A situation you don't want to guess about. Something that just needs another person.

In those moments, you press one button on the glasses and you are speaking to a human at our Support Centre. No phone, no app, no volunteer queue. A person, who can see what your glasses see, and who will help in any circumstance.

Why a subscription and not free?

Because we employ that team. Every member of the Mavis Support Centre is trained, DBS-checked and bound by UK data protection law. That costs money, and we would rather be honest about it than pretend a service like that can be free.

How is it different from free volunteer apps?

Volunteer services are a wonderful thing and we say that sincerely. But they are built on strangers, and their own guidelines reflect that: don't show ID documents, don't show bank cards, don't share medication or health details, and no guarantee of the helper's quality.

Mavis is the opposite. When you call, the people on our end know you. It is safe to share your video with them, whether you are at your desk at work reading a confidential document, at home going through your post, or at a pharmacy counter. Your data stays in the UK, with people who are accountable for it.

How is it different from paid interpreting services?

Those use trained agents too, and they do it well. The difference is that they sell time by the minute and run through your phone. Our support is built into the glasses you already wear, from a team that is part of the same company that built them.

Free services help with the small stuff. We built the Support Centre for the moments that matter.

πŸŽ‰ Mavis glasses are now available through DSA! πŸŽ“

We're thrilled to share that Mavis Itero – Study Edition has been approved by Student Finance England for funding through the Disabled Students' Allowance.

That means blind and partially sighted students in England can now be recommended Mavis smart glasses by their DSA Needs Assessor, in the same way as any other essential study equipment. Itero is being added to the approved DSA catalogue and will be available through Capita and Study Tech.

So what does Itero do? πŸ‘“
πŸ“– Reads printed and on-screen text aloud, hands-free
πŸ‘‹ Recognises objects and people
🌍 Describes what's around you
πŸ—ΊοΈ Helps you navigate campus
πŸ€– AI-powered assistance whenever you need it

All in lightweight, discreet glasses with a battery built to last a full day of lectures, libraries and life.

Starting uni or college with sight loss? Ask your DSA Needs Assessor about Itero – Study Edition. πŸ’™

Want to know more or book a demo? Email [email protected] or visit www.mavistech.uk.

Please share with any students, parents, teachers or disability advisers who might find this useful! πŸ™

DSA funding is assessed individually. Product approval means Itero can be recommended by a Needs Assessor; each award depends on Student Finance England agreeing it meets an essential need for that student.

One practical note: DSA approval covers England (Student Finance England). If students from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland ask, those are separate funding bodies, so you may want a ready answer for that.

There's a lot of anger about smart glasses at the moment β€” and not enough thought about who it hurts.

When smart glasses get called "pervert glasses," that word doesn't just hit the technology. It hits the person using them to read a menu, find their bus, or tell one tin off the shelf from another.

We understand why people worry about cameras in public. Those questions are fair. So here's exactly how Mavis works:

Mavis isn't entertainment eyewear. It's an aid, built for blind and visually impaired people.

There is no option to save a photo or video β€” it isn't a setting we turned off, it simply isn't part of the product. What the camera sees is analysed to describe the wearer's surroundings, and then instantly deleted. There's no gallery, no album, nothing kept anywhere. Nothing stored means nothing that can be shared or leaked.

That makes it a very different thing from consumer glasses designed for filming and posting your day. Same name, completely different purpose.

We're based in the UK, and we're currently reaching out to restaurants, venues and organisations that have banned smart glasses β€” not to argue, but to explain the difference and help them write rules that protect everyone's privacy without shutting disabled people out.

And if you have questions, ask us. Anyone is welcome to call or message us, and we'll answer honestly. We can afford to be completely open about our data, because we don't keep any.

Privacy and accessibility aren't opposites. Get the design right and you have both. πŸ’™

Nothing tells the Mavis story better than the people using our glasses every day.

This week on RNIB Tech Talk (episode 628), Carl Peach β€” who's been living with the Mavis Smart Glasses β€” sat down to share how they're fitting into his daily life: getting around, reading text, and navigating the world with more independence and confidence.

Carl Peach has been with us from the very beginning, and his continuous support and honest feedback have shaped Mavis at every step. From all of us β€” thank you, Carl Peach. πŸ™

Hearing directly from our users is exactly why we built Mavis. Every piece of feedback shapes where we take the technology next.
