💜 Meet our Team 💜

This week we’re introducing the incredible Melissa McIlhiney, Founder of Powerful Voices and Consultant Speech & Language Therapist.

Melissa’s journey has taken her from special education settings, through the NHS, and into building Powerful Voices with one clear mission… to make sure young people with complex communication needs feel heard, understood, and empowered. ✨

With a specialist passion for AAC, autism, trauma-informed practice, and complex needs. Melissa is always keen to learn, evolve, and advocates for the young people and families we support.

Away from work, she’s a proud mum of two, a passionate supporter on the sidelines of rugby pitches and basketball courts, and firmly believes there’s never a bad weather day for a BBQ. ☀️🔥

💜 Introducing Mylo 💜

He might look like just another cuddly toy. But, this little Dachshund meant so much more to one of our young people in their sessions recently.

When our young person arrived, they didn’t feel ready to take part in their session. And that's OK, after all sometimes we aren't ready for things that we have to do too.

There was no pressure. Instead, they lay on the floor, cuddled up with Mylo and took the time they needed to feel calm, safe and settled.

And when they were ready, they joined in.

They even gave their new little friend his name. 🥹💜

Sometimes speech and language therapy doesn’t start with words, activities or targets. Sometimes it starts with Mylo.

And that’s what we mean when we say we meet our young people where they are. 💜

💜 What does AAC through play look like? 💜

A little peek at the set-up from one of our recent AAC group sessions, where the theme was animals. 🐯

Using play, familiar themes and lots of opportunities to explore, we help children and young people to build confidence using AAC in a way that feels natural, fun and meaningful.

Because communication doesn’t have to happen sitting at a table. Sometimes it happens while choosing an animal, making silly sounds, joining in a game or sharing what you think.

Our specialist team works with young people who have a wide range of needs, making sure each young person is matched with a therapist who really understands their individual strengths and challenges.

In collaboration with Powerful Voices Ltd, we’ll be bringing specialist Occupational Therapy clinic and support to The Communication Hub, 37A York Road, Northampton, NN1 5QJ.

This collaboration is all about creating a supportive, inclusive space where children and families can be heard, understood and empowered. 🌟

We’re so excited about what this partnership will bring and the opportunity to make a real difference to children, young people and their families across Northampton and beyond.

💜 Meet Daniel 💜

We're delighted to introduce Daniel, our Financial Director.

While you might not see Daniel working directly with children and families, the work he does behind the scenes is vital to everything we do. From keeping our finances on track and supporting the growth of Powerful Voices to helping us plan for the future, Daniel plays a huge part in making sure we can continue supporting more children and young people every day.

He brings a calm, thoughtful approach to every decision, always helping us balance ambition with sustainability. Thanks to Daniel's guidance, we can continue investing in our team, developing new services and focusing on what matters most – helping every young person find their voice.

Behind every therapy session is a business that needs to run smoothly, and Daniel is a huge part of making that happen. We're incredibly grateful to have him as part of the Powerful Voices team.

Our Speech & Language Therapy Group Sessions give children and young people the opportunity to build their communication skills alongside others in a supportive, engaging environment.

Through shared activities, interaction and play, we create opportunities to practise skills, grow confidence and connect with others. All with the support and care of our experienced therapists.
