I did a thing!
Yesterday I spoke alongside incredible individuals about how we can help break the stigma around menopause and start the conversation. The event was sponsored by Avon UK and organised by the
Story time incoming…
I was approached with the brief by Liz from the MK Chambers of Commerce and I’ll be honest, my first thought was - am I the best person to speak on this? I haven’t gone through menopause (yet), I’m sure others are more qualified to do so?
Even with that doubt, I said yes, almost immediately. You say yes first and then you figure it out. The topic is close to my heart and a core part of Viva Core, did you know that women are likely to spend approximately 30 years of our lives in this stage (from peri to post)?
I set off to prepare, I spoke to friends about their experience and had coaching, I hammered in more on my Menopause training with Jennifer Burrell , friends sent me videos about public speaking and engagement.
The day before the event I knew how I would approach it, I had mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety (why does my anxiety lead me to the toilet these days!! TMI 🤣).
On that morning, I stepped in as myself, I have not experienced menopause but I have experienced the lack of support in women’s health (I mean, I built a business around it!), I have experienced symptoms of hormonal fluctuations and tiredness and having to show up in the workplace, I have my life experience - and what a powerful tool it turned out to be.
I was so fortunate to be in a room full of wonderful leaders, and Maz opened the room with vulnerability and passion. I really felt at ease.
I was really proud of myself! Some of the feedback I got was that I was ‘very real’, I mean wow!
So here’s to showing up and taking the leap, even when you think you’re not ready. Readiness is in the preparation, in giving it a go and improving going forward.
