Visiting Specialists: Cardiology 🫀
Hannah Stephenson is an RCVS and European specialist in veterinary cardiology and the director of HS cardiology. Hannah and her team of specialists and nurses regularly come for scheduled days at our Winnington practice to perform tests and provide specialist veterinary care.

Heart disease can be congenital (they were born with it), inherited (they got it from their parents’ genes) or acquired (it has developed throughout the pets’ life)

What are the common signs of heart disease?

Exercise intolerance – If your dog is reluctant to exercise or gets out of breath with a small amount of exercise.
Coughing – a new persistent cough
Breathing changes – difficulty breathing or faster breathing. In cats, panting or open mouth breathing is abnormal.
Fainting/collapse – this can happen if the heart disease is severe enough to cause a reduction in delivery of oxygen to the brain.

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month ⭐️
At Hollybank we have Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs - in dark blue) and Student Veterinary Nurses (SVNs - in light blue). Our nurses have many different roles within the veterinary team, here we have one of our RVNs, Becky, and our SVNs giving Pumpkin the cat a dematt and practicing bandaging on a well behaved Mabel! Of course with lots of treats and fusses! 🤍

👏🏻 Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 👏🏻

Please meet Willow, Kobe and Cooper, some of this week’s patients who our nursing team have seen.

Each year in May, the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) runs Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM).

The campaign celebrates what it means to be a veterinary nurse, raising awareness of the significant contributions made my veterinary nurses to animal health and welfare, and that of the public too.

This year’s theme is compassion and empathy. At Hollybank vets we always like to celebrate VNAM by writing about our wonderful registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) and showcasing what they do on a day to day basis 🩺💕🩹🐾

From 22nd April 2026, the Animal and Plant Health Agency will apply new EU rules to the non commercial movement of dogs, cats and ferrets entering the EU from third countries such as Great Britain. In Memory of the Bravest Boy, Homer 🖤🪽
Homer was a 16 year old Labrador crossbreed who was rescued by one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, Aimee and her partner. You may recognise him as a star model from many of our previous posts!
Over the past 10 years, Homer has also helped train many of our student nurses, he’s sat patiently whilst they bandaged him up (as you can see in the photos) and practiced other nursing skills on him, of course in exchange for a gravy bone!
In February this year, Homer’s health took a sudden decline and he started to suffer from seizures. His quality of life was suddenly lost and his parents had to make the very hard decision to put him to sleep.
We were in the process of writing this post about him when he passed away and as he meant a lot to everyone here at Hollybank, it felt right to still tell his story and share it with you all.

Chemotherapy in Pets 🐾
The ‘Big C’ can be a difficult diagnosis to come to terms with for our pets. The information can be overwhelming at the best of times but particularly after first hearing the news, and following this, discussing multiple options for treatment.
🐶 Meet Harvey - we wanted to highlight wonderful Harvey who is receiving chemotherapy, in the hope he will make the idea of chemotherapy and the decision to undergo it feel a little less daunting for owners and their pets.

Guide to Applying Eye Drops 👁️

If your dog or cat has been prescribed eye drops, applying them can feel a little tricky at first.

By following these steps you should find the process easier. With patience and practice, most pets become more tolerant of eye treatments, and the process becomes much easier for both of you.

1. Read all the instructions on the medication. Some eyedrops need to be kept in the fridge so ensure you are storing them correctly.

2. Wash your hands.

3. Choose a quiet and calm environment to administer the drops and having your pet sit on a non slip surface will help them feel more secure.

4. You can either position your pet on the floor between your legs, get someone to hold them or have them sit against a wall.

5. Raise the pets head to look up at the ceiling by holding under their chin.

6. Using your dominant hand, hold the bottle of eye drops and use your little finger or side of your hand to raise the pet’s upper eyelid a shown in the picture.

7. Squeeze one drop of the solution onto the eye without touching the surface of the eye to avoid contaminating the rest of the bottle.

8. Allow the patient to blink, which distributes the medication across the surface of the eye.

Remember to reward your pet with a treat. The more times you do this will encourage positive reinforcement and will build a positive association with the eye drops.

If your pet has been given a buster collar to wear, this should be kept on until the vet has allowed them to have it off. They may be more likely to rub their eyes after having drops applied and could cause trauma to the area.
