I wanted to share something a little different that may be of interest.

Ali, a very talented friend of mine, has recently launched Riverhaze Treasure Hunt, offering structured outdoor treasure hunt experiences designed to bring people together in a more meaningful, real-world way.

I’ve heard consistently positive feedback from those who have taken part in her earlier events. They are thoughtfully designed, engaging, and importantly, entirely screen-free. The experience relies on maps, observation and problem-solving, encouraging people to step away from devices and engage fully with their surroundings.

Alongside self-guided trails in Cromer and Norwich, there is an upcoming live event on 30 May 2026 in East Runton. This is a team-based treasure hunt across the village, finishing with a local collaboration for food, which adds a nice social element to the day.

From a professional perspective, activities like this offer a genuinely useful opportunity for collaboration, communication and time away from day-to-day pressures.

From a personal perspective, it simply sounds like a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

I’ve recently introduced a new type of support at ARROW for people navigating NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC).

Many families still want full support from start to finish, and that remains a core part of what I do. However, that isn’t always what’s needed.

Sometimes, what people are really looking for is clear, experienced input at a particular point. That might be before an assessment, after a decision has been made, or when it’s not clear whether things have been handled correctly.

I’ve developed these consultancy services to provide that support in a more flexible way. They are offered on a pay-as-you-go basis, so you can access specialist input when you need it, without committing to ongoing involvement.

In many cases, this involves reviewing key documents such as a Decision Support Tool or outcome letter, and providing a clear, independent view on what they show and whether there may be grounds to challenge. Documents can be sent in advance, and in some situations a written review on its own is enough, without the need for a call.

These services are also available to professionals supporting others through the CHC process, including solicitors, financial advisers, later-life practitioners and care home managers, where an independent view can help move things forward more quickly and with greater confidence.

The aim is simple: to make specialist CHC support easier to access at the points where it is most needed, while still offering full representation where that is the better option.

Should the NHS Be Funding This Care?

When someone you love needs long-term care, the conversation often starts with how the fees will be funded.

How much? How long? How quickly will savings disappear? Will we have to sell the house? How do we even begin to access support with all of this?

Only later does NHS Continuing Healthcare enter the conversation, and by that point, many families have still never even heard of it. On paper, the process can appear fairly straightforward. In reality, those embarking on it are often in for a shock.

What I Consider When First Assessing a Potential CHC Case

When families first make contact about NHS Continuing Healthcare, the role of an initial conversation is to establish whether what is being described has the hallmarks of a credible CHC case.

That assessment starts with how care is actually being delivered across an ordinary day and night: what support is required, how often, by whom, and whether it involves skilled clinical oversight rather than routine assistance with daily living. It also involves looking carefully at whether the available evidence supports the picture because CHC decisions must meet a legal, evidence-based test.

A short, focused discussion is usually enough to clarify whether a case warrants further assessment, whether evidence needs strengthening, or whether responsibility is more clearly rooted in social care.

One of the questions I hear most often is from families with elderly relatives in hospital: what happens at discharge, and how does this link to NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)?

Our latest newsletter — Hospital Discharge and NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) — sets out what to expect. It explains the four discharge pathways, what national policy says about reablement and short-term support, and the key questions you can ask to make sure there are no gaps in care or funding.

CHC is supposed to be considered in the community after discharge. In practice, it’s rarely mentioned — and too many families end up paying for care that should be covered in full by the NHS.

👋 It’s been a while since we posted here, but we’ve been busy supporting families through one of the toughest challenges they face: securing NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC).

CHC is meant to provide fully funded NHS care for people with the greatest health needs. Yet too often, families are left paying huge sums because they’re told their loved one’s needs are “social” rather than “health.” What many don’t realise is that the law is already on their side.

Landmark cases — from the Leeds Ombudsman (1994) to the Coughlan judgment (1999), and later decisions like Pointon and T v Haringey — established the NHS’s duty to fund care where needs are primarily health-based. But in our experience, these cases are rarely mentioned in CHC assessments.
