I was shocked by the response I got to this.

I put a poll on my stories asking people to rate themselves.

The topic in question was “how well regulated are you?”

I appreciate nervous system regulation is quite a new topic to many…

And they, you, might not be intimately familiar with what good, or bad, regulation might look like.

I’ve been working on this with my clients for a number of years now - so I gave an example list of the symptoms of a poorly regulated nervous system that I see most often.

Irritability.
Low libido.
Racing & intrusive thoughts.
Muscle spasms or eyelid twitches.
Trouble sleeping / Insomnia.
Increasing screen time.
Procrastination & avoidance.
Stiff, sore and slow to recover.
Impulsive purchase behaviour.
Over eating - usually sweet or starchy food.
Increased abdominal body fat.

Over 1,000 of you kindly voted on that poll.

The average score didn’t shock me…

But it did sadden me.

Out of 1-5 [5 being good]…

The average of 1,000 people - was less than 2.

What’s most frustrating, as a coach…

Firstly, is that you will not meaningfully improve under those conditions.

Secondly, is that all of this is entirely avoidable.

It doesn’t require endless time off.

You don’t need to journal for an hour or day…

Become a monk or walk away from anything ‘stressful’

It doesn’t require high tech, fancy protocols - or doing lots ‘more’ stuff.

It just requires a consistent and deliberate approach.

It necessitates active management of the things that are driving you in the wrong direction.

I’ve successfully implemented it with hundreds of clients.

If you read this and saw more of yourself in that list than you’d like…

Solving that is a core tenet of what we do.

Send me a DM.

Bank Holidays don’t count when you run a Business.

That’s what I used to say to people.

I believed it, too.

The truth was I was just too afraid to take time off.

I thought that if I turned my back, it was all going to slip through my fingers.

I felt guilty for taking time off. Like I hadn’t earned it, or wasn’t deserving of it yet.

But rather than saying that - I constructed a half-truth and tried to pass it off as nobility.

I love working on my business.

I love training hard.

I may not be the smartest, fittest or fastest…

But you’d be hard pressed to find anyone more committed and consistent than me.

That’s the way I like it.

But progress only begins when you tell the truth.

I had to sit with those uncomfortable feelings and stop creating ‘busy-ness’ to avoid them.

What got me to where I was, couldn’t get me to where I am now - years on.

The truth was that it was fear, not fulfilment, driving that unrelenting hard work - at the expense of my enjoyment of the little things in life.

It wasn’t until I looked inward that I realised I was building on sandy foundations.

It was only when I fixed those and firmed up my core beliefs and behaviours…

That I stopped feeling those sinking feelings.

I stopped waking up and then quickly feeling as though I were already behind - and had no time or space to rest.

If you’re not working on your foundations…

You can have all the money, medals and material possessions in the world…

You still won’t feel enough, safe or free.

It’s not about becoming lazy, or losing your edge.

It’s about being able to change gears at your own chosing.

I’m grateful to be enjoying these bank holiday moments - something I used to be afraid of!

Core lesson: the bottleneck is always at the top of the bottle!

I was asked this question on a podcast recently…

My good friend Staz has started a podcast.

Instead of sitting down and being quite formal, in a studio…

He goes for a run or hike with the guest. It works well.
In this case - the guest was me.

The question he asked…

“What traits make a high performer?”

I’m very good at understanding the complexities and nuances of holistic high performance.

I’ve studied it and coached professionally for over 13 years, so I probably should have a grasp on it by now…

But when I simmer it down.

The answer is surprisingly simple.

I thought back to all the people I’ve worked with…

Staz being one of them, as me & my team helped prepare him to set the record breaking ‘Mission Everest’.

My honest answer…

Is that high performing people never don’t do the basics.

They are ruthlessly consistent with the implementation of the very basics of human functioning.

Complexity appeals to the simplistic mind.

Fancy protocols and cleverly named blueprints are all well and good…

But if the very basics of your physiology are compromised - you’re fu**ed. In a word.

I firmly believe that health is the bedrock of all performance.

And if you chase performance to the detriment of health…

You’ve already lit a fuse that will eventually detonate - it’s just a matter of time.

Sacrificing sleep for more work.

Grabbing convenience food all the time.

Skipping sessions because you’re too busy.

Choosing ‘busy-ness’ over creating a vision.

Gulping down more coffee but never being hydrated.

Spending all your time in cars, offices and hotels - but rarely outdoors.

This isn’t an exhaustive list and these things might seem overly reductive…

‘Too easy’, perhaps.

But if it’s so easy…

Why aren’t you doing it?

If you want to be the 1%…

The work starts here.

The life and body you have is your own fault.

If you’re out of shape and riddled with niggles & pain…

You’ve chosen that by being so glued to your screen all day.

If you’re constantly teetering on the edge of burnout…

You’ve chosen that by avoiding ‘being in your body’

If your sleep is s**t.

If you’re irritable and short tempered.

If you’re getting fatter and more inflamed…

You’ve chosen all of this.

I define intelligence as the rate at which you make changes after receiving new information or feedback.

So, with all due respect…

You’re acting incredibly stupid for someone for someone so bright.

Why?

Because it’s easier to avoid difficult truths. Your ego would rather you did, in fact.

Because there is no one to hold you accountable.

Because the ramifications of your decisions have not been fully realised…

Yet.

There is a whole world out there that you are not experiencing.

There are new levels of performance you’re not capable of reaching.

You’re wasting hours a day, days a month and probably missing out on thousands of quality moments and golden opportunities.

And that will continue to be the case until you start taking the hard right over the easy wrong.

I’m not insisting you add ‘more’ on to your day.

I’m telling you that investing time into the right areas will save you time and create the freedom to invest into the areas you actually want to show up in.

Progress begins when you start telling the truth.

If you’re committed to becoming the best version of yourself - keep your eye on what’s happening at Uncharted.

You might need to read this today.

There is nothing wrong with you.

To many of you - this will seem blatantly obvious.

But to some of you, my past self included…

These 6 words were the antidote to so many feelings I was struggling with.

At the route of my obsessive work ethic…

My decisions to prioritise work over relationships [repeatedly]

My compulsion to push harder, faster and further - in all walks of life…

Was a bottom line belief of “I’m not good enough”.

Imagine thinking that your prized possession isn’t as good as someone else’s…

It creates a sense of shame and embarrassment.

A bottom line belief that “I must work harder to disprove this”.

“I must present a different image of myself, to cover it up!”

That dark energy can be tremendously powerful.

And, over the short term, it works. It really works.

You’ll prove people wrong.

You’ll escape whatever you wanted to get away from.

You can put yourself in entirely different walks of life.

But it will run out - and it will stop working.

Those are two inevitabilities.

You will have no-one left to prove wrong.

There will be no more steps of the ladder left to climb.

You will have everything you said would ever make you happy.

You will begin to see the distance it’s caused in your relationships…

And the toll it’s taken on your body.

And all that remains is your own inner critic…

Still telling you that “you should be working harder”.

With new levels, comes new devils.

You can have enormous pride in having come this far.

But imagine how far you could go…

And how light you would feel…

If you didn’t have that weight burdening you?

If you want to go fast, go alone.

You’ve already completed that part.

If you want to go far, go together.

Let’s start the next stage of your journey.

Have you spotted this pattern yet?

Have a dream.

Experience worry.

Negative predictions kick in.

Needless precautions take over.

You come up short of the outcome - and what lesson did you learn?

Usually; the wrong one.

You confirm your own limited beliefs are justified and that your flawed predictions were accurate.

For as long as this cycle continues - your growth, success and fulfilment cannot.

It’s time to do the thing.

You may not agree with this…

But I believe you have to optimise hardware before software.

In other words…

I see a lot of people discussing tactics, reframes or heuristics for the mind.

I read clever little quips and play-on-words on LinkedIn…

The unsupervised playground for the self indulgent egotist.

But all of them have a common omission.

Your body.

If it’s in the blood, it’s in the brain.

You can have all of the journal prompts, witty reframes and affirmations you like…

But if you’re not doing the basics with your body…

You are always going to be severely compromised.

I’m not talking about running ultras or spending 10+ hours per week training…

It’s even more basic than that.

Are you waking up the same time each day?

Are you eating appropriately - maximising protein, minimising additives and processed food?

Are you exercising, vigorously, 3 or more times per week?

Are you spending enough time outside, in natural daylight in spaces with a wide panoramic?

You’d be amazed how many of your worries, ruminations and negative predictions seem to ‘disappear’ by doing those simple things.

The problem, though…

Is that your inner critic doesn’t want you ‘in your body’.

In order for its will to be done - it needs you firmly in your own head.

Worrying.

Predicting.

Ruminating.

And honestly, the reason it wins so many times…

Is because you’ve let it have so much practice.

If you want what you’ve never had…

You need to do what you’ve never done.

I don’t care who the mindset tip came from - Special Forces Warrior or a Shaolin Monk.

If you’re not actively and consistently working on the hardware…

You’re mentally ma********ng.

If you want to sort the hardware first…

That's the first thing we work on.
