Sebaceous filaments are a normal part of your pores. Theyโ€™re made up of sebum (your skinโ€™s natural oil) and dead skin cells, helping move sebum from the sebaceous gland towards the skinโ€™s surface ๐Ÿงด๐Ÿงฌ

So before you start squeezing themโ€ฆ. STOP! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Squeezing them may temporarily make them look less noticeable, but the pore will simply produce more sebum and the filament will naturally fill again.

Instead, focus on deep cleansing and keeping excess oil and buildup under control. Treatments such as a HydroFacial or a suitable deep-cleansing facial can help remove surface buildup and excess sebum without attacking your skin.

And noโ€ฆ. you cannot permanently remove your sebaceous filaments because theyโ€™re a normal part of your skin biology ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ

Your pores arenโ€™t dirty. Theyโ€™re doing their job ๐Ÿ”ฌ

It doesnโ€™t just magically appear overnightโ€ฆ.

A pore can become blocked with sebum and dead skin cells, creating the perfect environment for inflammation to develop. Your immune system then gets involved, sending immune cells to the area and suddenly youโ€™ve got a very noticeable little red visitor ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

So that spot you discovered this morning?

Thereโ€™s been a whole biological process happening underneath your skin before you even saw it ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿฆ

This is one of the things I think gets missed when we talk about repeated dermal filler treatments.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is designed to gradually break down but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that all of the previous filler has disappeared by the time youโ€™re ready for your next appointment.

So imagine adding a little moreโ€ฆ

Then a little moreโ€ฆ

Then a little more ๐Ÿ‘€

If previous product is still present, youโ€™re potentially adding new volume on top of what is already there.

Over time, repeated treatments can contribute to an increasingly full, heavy or puffy appearance, what social media often calls filler face or balloon face ๐ŸŽˆ

And this is why I donโ€™t love the idea of simply thinking:

Itโ€™s been 6 months, so I need more fillerโ€ฆ

๐Ÿงฌ The biology is more complicated than that.

How long filler remains can vary depending on the product, where itโ€™s injected, how much is used and the individual.

And no, this doesnโ€™t mean everyone should automatically dissolve their filler every year. There isnโ€™t a universal dissolve and refill schedule.

Sometimes the more important question is:

How much filler is actually still there? ๐Ÿ‘€

Because your face isnโ€™t necessarily starting from zero every time you have another treatment.

โ€ฆ.and suddenly your stomach decides to announce itself to the entire room ๐Ÿ“ข๐Ÿ˜‚

But hereโ€™s the weird part:

It doesnโ€™t necessarily mean youโ€™re hungry ๐Ÿ‘€

Those gurgling, bubbling and rumbling sounds are called borborygmi ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Theyโ€™re produced as your digestive tract moves gas, liquid and partially digested food around ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Your intestinal muscles continuously contract in waves called peristalsis ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿผ pushing the contents of your digestive system along.

You take ONE innocent little bite and suddenly your nose has decided to join the emergency ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

But itโ€™s not actually because your food is hot in temperatureโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ‘€

The culprit is capsaicin ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ which is the molecule responsible for that spicy sensation.

Capsaicin activates a sensory receptor called TRPV1, which normally responds to things like heat and potentially damaging stimuli ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿงฌ

Your nervous system basically goes:

โ€œ๐Ÿ”ฅ TOO HOT! DO SOMETHING!โ€

And one of the responses can be increased secretion from the glands in your noseโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป

Which is why you can end up with:

๐ŸŒถ๏ธ Burning mouth
๐Ÿฅต Sweaty face

Ever seen that thick, white, cheesy stuff come out of a cyst and wonderedโ€ฆ. WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคข๐Ÿง€

Wellโ€ฆ. itโ€™s not just pus! ๐Ÿ‘€

An epidermoid cyst is a little sac that forms underneath the skin ๐Ÿซฃ๐Ÿงฌ

The lining of the cyst contains cells that produce keratin which is a the tough protein thatโ€™s also found in your skin, hair and nails ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿป๐Ÿงฌ

But instead of those cells being shed from the surface of your skin, the dead cells and keratin become trapped inside the cyst ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Over time, they build upโ€ฆ. and upโ€ฆ. and UPโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿ“ˆ

Until you get that thick, pale, cheese-like material ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿคฎ

๐Ÿ”ฌ So what are you actually seeing?

๐Ÿงฌ Keratin
๐Ÿงซ Shed/dead skin cells
๐Ÿซง Other cellular debris

And thatโ€™s why it can look nothing like normal pus! ๐Ÿ‘€

Your skin is basically running a tiny recycling system underneath the surfaceโ€ฆ. and sometimes it gets VERY gross ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคข

โš ๏ธ Donโ€™t try to squeeze or pop a cyst yourself. The cyst wall can remain underneath the skin and it can become inflamed or infected ๐Ÿฉน

You stretch your skinโ€ฆ. and suddenly these little lines decide to move in ๐Ÿ˜‚

But stretch marks arenโ€™t just something happening on the surface of your skin ๐Ÿ‘€

When the body changes size rapidly like during pregnancy, puberty, weight gain, muscle growth or other periods of rapid growth, the skin has to adapt to that expansion.

Deep inside the skin, in the dermis, thereโ€™s a network of proteins including collagen and elastin that give your skin its strength and elasticity ๐Ÿงฌ

When the skin is stretched rapidly, this extracellular matrix undergoes remodelling and structural changes.

That can contribute to the formation of stretch marks, which often start out red, pink or purple before gradually becoming lighter over time ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’œโžก๏ธ๐Ÿค

So those lines arenโ€™t simply โ€œstretchingโ€ on the surfaceโ€ฆ.

Theyโ€™re a visible sign of changes happening deeper within your skin ๐Ÿ”ฌ

And nope, having stretch marks doesnโ€™t mean your skin is โ€œbadโ€ or unhealthy ๐Ÿงก

Theyโ€™re incredibly common and can happen to pretty much anyone.

That tiny little bite is basically your immune system going:

EXCUSE MEโ€ฆ. WHAT DID YOU JUST PUT IN MY SKIN?! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿšจ

When a mosquito bites, it injects saliva into your skin while feeding ๐ŸฆŸ

Your immune system recognises proteins in that saliva as foreign and activates mast cells in the surrounding tissue ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ”ฌ

These cells release histamine and THAT is where things get interestingโ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ‘€

Histamine causes nearby blood vessels to widen and become more permeable, creating the familiar redness and swelling around the bite ๐Ÿฉธ

It also stimulates sensory nerve endings in your skinโ€ฆ.

๐Ÿ”ฅ HELLO, ITCH. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

And then you scratch itโ€ฆ.

Which can temporarily interrupt the itch signals, but can also make the inflammation worse ๐Ÿ˜‚

So that tiny mosquito bite?

Itโ€™s actually a full-blown immune response happening in your skin ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿฉธ

With vitiligo, the immune system attacks melanocytes which are the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿงฌ

So what if we couldโ€ฆ put them back? ๐Ÿ‘€

Thatโ€™s the idea behind melanocyte transplantation.

For carefully selected people with stable vitiligo, doctors can take pigment-producing cells from an area of unaffected skin, isolate them and transplant them into the depigmented area ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงซ

The transplanted melanocytes can then settle into the skin and start producing melanin again allowing the area to repigment ๐Ÿคฏโœจ

But thereโ€™s an important catchโ€ฆ

This isnโ€™t a guaranteed permanent cure โŒ

The underlying autoimmune process that caused the vitiligo can still be present, so repigmentation can sometimes be lost again.

And it isnโ€™t suitable for everyone, stability of the vitiligo, the location and other factors all matter ๐Ÿงฌ

But biologically?

We can actually replace the cells responsible for making the pigment ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ”ฌ

And THAT is pretty incredible.

Because apparently your body likes to snitch on you ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซฃ

When you feel embarrassed, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in โšก๏ธ๐Ÿง

This causes the tiny blood vessels in your facial skin to dilate ๐Ÿฉธโฌ†๏ธ meaning they widen and allow more blood to flow through them.

More blood near the surface of your skin = hello, RED FACE ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ…

And unlike blushing from heat or exercise, this one is triggered by your emotional response ๐Ÿง โค๏ธ

So when someone says:

โ€œWhy are you going red?โ€ ๐Ÿ‘€

โ€ฆyour blood vessels have already told on you ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

Your body is basically saying:
