Becoming an observer of your mind isn’t just a philosophical idea — it has a strong basis in neuroscience. When you step back and notice your thoughts instead of getting caught up in them, you engage the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for awareness, decision-making, and self-regulation. This helps you respond more thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

At the same time, this practice reduces activity in the default mode network (DMN), a brain system associated with mind-wandering, rumination, and self-referential thinking. When the DMN is overactive, people tend to get stuck in loops of overthinking. Observing your thoughts helps quiet this network, creating a sense of mental space and clarity.
