World Parkinson's Day took place over the weekend. As of now, there are approximately 166,000 people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the UK. This number is expected to rise to around 173,000 by 2030 as the population ages.

Each person with Parkinson’s presentation will differ, however, generally people will have similar difficulties relating to speech, language and swallowing.

Speech and language therapists are a crucial part of the multidisciplinary team that helps people affected by Parkinson’s, and their families and carers, to manage their condition, offering support to manage communication and swallowing problems and maintain their quality of life. Please reach out to an SLT if you require support with any aspects of swallowing or communication.

Thank you very much to Virgin Active UK for their generous donation of Easter eggs to our younger service users! These are being handed out across our sickle cell, children's community nursing, and Children's Hospital at Home services, helping to spread some Easter cheer and put lots of smiles on little faces. đŸ«

Swallowing is something most of us don’t think about - until it becomes difficult. Dysphagia can affect people of any age and has a major impact on health, safety, and quality of life.

What do SLTs do:

- Assess and diagnose swallowing difficulties

- Recommend food & drink texture changes

- Offer swallowing exercises

- Support family, friends and carers on how best to help their loved one

- Work closely with dietitians and other care staff

If swallowing has become challenging, please refer yourself to ASLT. Support is available and early intervention can make a difference.

Eating and drinking are essentials we often take for granted but for some people, it can be a challenge. For those with eating, drinking or swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), every mealtime can be a struggle.

That’s where Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) come in. We work with individuals to support safe swallowing, support dietitians with nutrition and hydration, and in turn, better quality of life.

Eating and drinking safely can help prevent malnutrition, dehydration, choking, and associated health issues and simply help people to enjoy mealtimes again.

Let’s raise awareness of how crucial proper support is this Nutrition & Hydration Week.

Last week, Atlas the labrador from Therapy Dogs Nationwide received a warm welcome from our service users at the Foxbury Rehabilitation Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital for bonding time and cuddles in between their rehabilitation sessions.

Pet therapy was introduced as a way to encourage healthy interactions and cater to the mental wellbeing of those on the ward who are often away from home for long periods of time whilst on their journey to recovery. Many of the patients have had pets themselves, so we hoped a furry friend would provide some happiness and familiarity to their day.

Patients expressed how interacting with Atlas was very rewarding, reduced their anxiety, and provided a much-needed fun experience to take a moment away from their usual physical rehabilitation exercises.

A special thank you to Therapy Dogs Nationwide for dropping by!

It was fantastic to attend the Langley Park School for Girls' Careers Fair again this year. We met so many passionate young people who wanted to learn about what it's like to work in healthcare and in the NHS. This year, our podiatrists' ultrasound equipment showcasing a non-invasive way to measure blood flow and pulse was a big hit with the students.

It was great to encourage young people to think ahead about future healthcare careers and what they might need to focus on at school to get there. We hope to see some of them working in the NHS in the future!

Many thanks to Sheila, our Talent Development Manager, Lindsay, our Head of Community Allied Health Professionals, and Sherlon, our podiatrist, for getting out there and connecting so well with the students.

South East London ICS has a new resource to help people find their way to the care they need – whether it’s going to their local pharmacy, a minor eye conditions service or resting up at home. The aim is to raise awareness of the full range of options and to increase people’s knowledge and understanding of what route to take for a particular symptom or condition.
