With the hot weather alert🚨
Please make sure you take the time to check on the elderly who may be struggling to deal with it whether it be a relative, neighbour or an elderly person you may know.
Please make sure they are..
1. Drinking plenty of fluids.. seniors often experience diminished sense of Thirst as they age so please encourage drinking plenty of fluids.
2. Block the sun at home...keep curtains and blinds completely closed during peak sunlight hours (typically 11am -3pm)to keep room cooler.
3. Keep windows closed during the hottest parts of the day. In the early morning or late evening, when the outside temperature drops, open windows on opposite sides of the home to create a cooling cross-ventilation.
4.Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Avoid dark colours that absorb heat and tight garments that restrict airflow.
5.Avoid strenuous outdoor tasks, like gardening or mowing the lawn, during the hottest hours. If you need to go out for appointments or walks, schedule them for the early morning or late evening.
6. Eat cool light meals..Digestive processes generate metabolic heat. Switch to light, refreshing meals like salads, cold soups, and fruits with a high water content (e.g., watermelon, strawberries, and cucumber).
7.Review Medications...common medications—including those for blood pressure, diuretics, and antihistamines—can interfere with the body's ability to regulate temperature and stay hydrated. Review current medications with a GP to understand specific heat-related risks.
8.Arrange for family, friends, or neighbours to check in on anyone you may know who needs help especially during heatwaves to ensure they are coping well and that the home remains a safe temperature.
