James' Journey

James' Journey James has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy;a fatal condition with no cure. This is a record of his journey.

James turns 16 next year, what will be an incredible milestone will actually be tainted by stress and many months of work prior.

James has an indefinate award of Disability Living Allowence(DLA). This payment allows James to access the world a little and without it would nave no real opportunities. Half of it goes to motability (along with a £10k upfront deposit) so he can have a wheelchair accessible vehicle(WAV).

At 16 we have to prove that James is disabled enough to be allowed to transition from DLA to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The criteria is vastly different from DLA. Disability doesnt fit neatly into very tight criteria and the assessment is personally subjective by 1 person who doesnt understand complex rare conditions.

There is no guarantee that James will not recieve less money, or that he will not loose his WAV.

Its totally on the parents to provide evidence and even then it may not be enough.

The only treatment for DMD is Steriods. Long term high-dose steriod use comes with many worrying side-effects.

One of them is Adrenal insufficiency. The body stops making natural steriods this makes illness or injury potentially life threatening.

Last weekend James became unwell and couldnt hold his oral steriods down. Things escalated quickly and we had to call the paramedics to give him his emergency hydrocortisone injection.

The next 8 hours was spent in a&e whilst they monitored him.

Thankfully the paramedics and paediatric team at bristol are well trained and he responded well and was home by 11pm.

James as ever was a star.

Another milestone. This young man turned 15 . As James is very much his own person, he wanted fresh fruit rather than a traditional cake and a BBQ. Was lovely to see him so happy.

James' school has been doing a lot of cooking recently. James went to the shops and chose the ingredients and today was making lunch for the family. He had gluten free bases and mixed reggae reggae sauce into the tomato sauce. Grating was very difficult but he was so very proud being able to contribute to the household.
