Why can't I switch off?

It's one of the questions I hear most often.

Many people assume they need to "do less" to feel calmer, but I wonder if there's another reason.

We spend so much of our lives trying to be everything to everyone: a parent, partner, employee, business owner, friend or carer. Sometimes our minds don't know which role to put down.

In a recent counselling session, I had a realisation that changed how I think about being present. Perhaps peace isn't about escaping life; perhaps it's about allowing ourselves to be just one person for a little while.

It's something I often witness during Reiki and Indian Head Massage sessions. People regularly tell me, "I didn't realise how much I needed that."

Maybe what they're experiencing isn't just relaxation. Maybe it's the rare opportunity to stop juggling every role and simply be.

I explore this idea in my latest blog: Learning to Be Present: What if we're trying to be too many people at once?

Have you ever noticed how many different roles you carry in a single day?

For years, I thought being present meant trying to empty my mind or stop my thoughts. Recently, I realised something different.

Perhaps being present isn’t about thinking less. Perhaps it’s about trying to be fewer people at once.

When I’m with my son, I try to just be Mum.

When I’m with a client, I try to just be their therapist.

When I’m with my parents, I try to simply be their daughter.

I’ve found that giving myself permission to fully step into each role has helped me feel calmer and more connected.

How many roles do you find yourself stepping into each day and how often are you actually present for that role, rather then simply going through the motions while you prepare for the next one?

If this resonates with you, check out my latest blog: ‘A Little Calmer Asks...What if we're trying to be too many people at once?’ 🤔

Why do I always feel like I'm trying to be ten people at once?

Many of us aren't struggling because life is too busy.

We're struggling because we're trying to be every version of ourselves all at once.

Mother.
Employee.
Partner.
Friend.
Carer.
Business owner.

Perhaps peace isn't about becoming someone different.

Perhaps it's about allowing ourselves to be just one person for a little while.

If this resonates you you might enjoy this month's blog, 'A Little Calmer Asks...What if we're trying to be too many people at once?'. In this edition I explore what happened when I stopped trying to be everything to everyone at once. It's a reflection on mindfulness, presence, work-life balance and the quiet joy that can be found by simply being where you are 💚

July has been a month of growth. 🌿

My second full month of being self-employed has challenged me in ways I hadn't expected.

There have been personal hurdles, moments of overwhelm and days where life has felt determined to test whether I really meant it when I said I was giving everything to building A Little Calmer.

But despite it all...I've kept on showing up.

This month has brought new networking connections, exciting learning opportunities, the launch of my new blog series A Little Calmer Asks, wonderful new clients, returning clients, and some incredibly kind 5⭐ reviews.

I've also had the privilege of saying yes to a new advisory role, returning to supporting people navigating fertility treatment through a project that I am so honoured to be part of and reminding me of why I started this journey in the first place 💚

Every conversation, recommendation, booking and word of encouragement has helped me believe a little more that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.

Thank you for being part of the journey 🫶

This self care day, give yourself permission to pause.

Self care doesn't have to look like spa days or retreats. Sometimes it's as simple as allowing yourself a moment to pause, look around and breath deeply before returning to the business of life.

Before you move on with your day...

Take one slow breath.

Drop your shoulders.

Relax your jaw.

Uncross your legs.

Unclench your hands.

Notice the chair supporting you.

Just for a moment...

allow yourself to do nothing at all.

You deserve moments like these.

Happy World Self Care Day 🫶
