I posted this last year, but the sentiment still stands.
This morning, despite not living in a country that celebrates Thanksgiving, nor being an Amazon subscriber, my inbox was flooded with Black Friday deals and reductions on fast fashion and unnecessary gadget upgrades. It’s scary how many billions of pounds will get spent in the next week, and so much of it will go to the filthy rich, while garment makers can’t feed their kids and couriers struggle to make their deadlines.
Scarier still is that a lot of money will come from the pockets of people who can’t make ends meet but feel the external pressure to make “this Christmas one to remember” - by ordering expensive gifts and needless stuff, yet come January the things will be tossed aside and those pockets will be left empty, struggling to pay the gas bill or front the food shop.
And really, are you remembering the expensive mass produced products that you spent all that money on, or are you remembering when mum burnt the potatoes and dad fell asleep with his paper crown? Are you remembering the joy of decorating the tree, or the expensive new decorations you bought after seeing an influencer with them?
Please keep being your amazing selves and shop small, choose ethically, give mindfully - and don’t buy into this madness 🖤
