From practitioner to patient: 12 weeks post-wrist fracture and ORIF surgery ❄️🏂

Even as an experienced snowboarder, accidents happen. But a silly fall gave me a firsthand look at the recovery process, and I’ve learned a lot from a professional viewpoint over the last three months.
From navigating NHS care pathways to managing post-operative pain, it’s been a masterclass in injury management.

My two biggest lessons?

First, capacity. We all do too much. Being forced to step back and lower my expected daily output was an eye-opening lesson in pacing.

Second, pain vs. discomfort. Expected pain tolerance is highly individual, but the principles of tissue healing are universal. Discomfort is okay. It’s a necessary part of the process that allows us to safely push our boundaries—in injury, in healing, and in life.

To anyone else currently in the thick of rehab: trust the process, embrace the discomfort, and actually take the rest day. 🧠✨

Do you still train when a bad injury has you in a cast, a sling, or completely sidelined on one side?

The answer... Absolutely! 💯

It comes down to a sports science phenomenon called Cross-Education.

Why should you train the uninjured side? 🤔

* The Brain-Body Connection: Training your healthy limb keeps the neural pathways active, sending "strength signals" across the spinal cord to the injured side.
* Preserve Muscle & Strength: Research shows that training your good side directly helps the immobilized muscles maintain their activity, size, and strength—even while stuck in a cast! 💪

Although the study in slide 1 is from 2015, Cross-Education isn't new. It’s been a staple in Sports Science for decades (I actually did a presentation on this during my undergrad Applied Sports Science degree back in 2005!) 👩🏼‍🎓

A personal reality check 🦴
After fracturing my own radius (wrist), I was amazed by how quickly my dominant forearm muscles deteriorated. It took just 2–3 weeks of forced inactivity to see a dramatic, visible change (swipe to slide 3 to see the difference).

Your rehab doesn't have to wait ⏱️

Are you currently post-op, or recovering from a fracture in a cast? You don’t need to wait until you are fully healed to start moving again. In fact, waiting might just set you back further.

Get in touch today to find out how we can safely keep you moving and fast-track your recovery! ✉️

What actually happens under your skin after surgery? 🤔👇

Whether it’s a joint replacement, fracture fixation, or a C-section, any surgical incision leaves behind scar tissue. While it's a natural part of healing, that tissue can thicken and create a tight, restricted feeling in the surrounding areas.

That’s where Post-Op Scar Tissue Therapy comes in!

Using specialized techniques (and targeted tools), a therapist can help:
✨ Release deep tightness and thickening
✨ Restore mobility to the surrounding tissue
✨ Teach you self-care techniques for maximum, long-term relief

⚠️ Note: Your wound must be 100% fully healed with all stitches removed before we can begin therapy.

If you’ve had a recent operation and feel like your tissues haven’t fully recovered, let’s get you moving freely again. DM us or click the link in our bio to see how we can help! 📲

5½ weeks post- distal radius break and ORIF surgery... 🦴

And I had some good news from my follow-up at the fracture clinic last week... 🩻

🎉 I can go back to work (sooner than I had thought!). Wahoo 🎉

However, this will be a very gradual return. Doc has advised only a few hours if Soft Tissue Therapy a week to begin with... so I will be in touch with existing patients who were booked and had to reschedule first. It will still be at least 2 weeks before I am back in doing Assessment and Soft Tissue Therapy sessions, so please hang tight! 😊

Since I didn't post last week. I've noted some highlights from the last 2 weeks:
* I started doing my own soft tissue release, which has really helped with the mobility and stiffness
* The finger and hand pain weirdly lasted a really long time (it took to about week 4 to go). I was surprised at how long this took to go.
* The muscle wastage is real though, and it happens quickly!
* Continued with rehab but increased the range of motion, working through discomfort. Remember, discomfort is ok, pain is not (ideal).
* The rehab and recovery journey is supposed to be mostly linear. Some days might be worse, but weeks should be better than before. That means it is working.

Some of the metal work may need to be removed still, so it is another 2 appointments within the next month before they make that call. Will keep you posted!

Thank you to everyone who has been patient with me 🙏🏽

When you get your 4-year-old to do your rehab for you, it may not go quite according to plan.... 😂

Had the two of them on my arm the other day. It weirdly helped a lot 😁

Update coming next week on my progress. I have some news... 👀
