THERAPIST TIP TUESDAY 🤍
“Calm down.”
I think most of us have said it at some point when our child is overwhelmed…I know I have.
But when a child is already experiencing a big emotion, simply telling them to calm down doesn’t necessarily give them the tools to actually do it.
Instead, we can try:
“I’m here.”
“Let’s take a minute together.”
“Tell me what you need when you’re ready.”
Sometimes our children need to borrow our calm before they can find their own.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t boundaries or that every behaviour is okay. It simply means helping them regulate first can make it much easier to talk about what happened afterwards.
Save this for one of those big-feeling moments. 🤍
