If you saw Fridayโs post on how the immune system โlearnsโโฆ this is where it really starts to show up in real life. Because right now, weโre moving into the next phase of spring.
In fact, weโre just a week or so away from meteorological summer (almost June alreadyโฆ how did that happen?). Which means - weโre heading straight into ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป.
For those affected horses, this means that familiar return of the deeper pollen allergy syndrome as the weather warms and humidity rises, with this next phase often feeling deeper than the early spring pollens:
โข heavier chest congestion
โข increased respiratory effort
โข wheezing, coughing, heave lines...
And for some, it can become quite significant (this was our Kelso back in 2006 when he first came to us.)
๐ฆ๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐โ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐ด๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ป?
It's all about when the immune system overreacts to airborne particles such as tree pollen, grass pollen - even weeds.
The trigger comes in, and the system responds. Histamine is released - but instead of resolving the trigger, the immune system response becomes exaggerated, and inflammatory signals follow.
The result? Excess mucus production, itchy irritation, coughing, watery eyesโฆ and in more chronic cases, asthma-type flare-ups.
But hereโs the thing. Not every horse reacts this way - same field, same pollen, same environment โ and just like sweet itch, completely different response. So the question becomes: โ๐๐๐ฎ?
When we talked about KPU last week, we explored what happens when the system is under internal pressure:
โข detox pathways not working efficiently
โข the gutโliver connection disrupted
โข the immune system already on high alert
So when a seasonal trigger like pollen comes alongโฆ it creates a much bigger response than it should.
And weโre seeing these allergy patterns - in both humans and horses - becoming more common, for a number of layered reasons:
โข modern feeding practices and gut disruption
โข early-life microbiome challenges
โข environmental pressures
โข longer, more intense pollen seasons due to our never-ending summer heatwaves
โข chronic underlying stress on the system
At this point, itโs less about one single solution - and more about supporting the system from a few key angles:
โข ๐ฃ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐ง๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ โ for early, upper-airway seasonal sensitivity
โข ๐ฃ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข โ when symptoms begin to involve the chest or become more established
โข ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฃ๐น๐๐ โ when breathing becomes more restricted, laboured, or visibly compromised, and deeper respiratory support is needed
Once breathing has stabilised, many horses can move back to a lighter level of support.

At the same time, itโs important to recognise when this isnโt just about the lungs.
If pollen sensitivity sits alongside other concerns โ such as gut instability, skin reactivity, hoof quality โ this often points to a deeper, whole-system imbalance.
โข ๐๐ฃ๐จ๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ข โ for horses showing recurring, interconnected patterns linked to the KPU spectrum
In these cases, supporting the underlying gutโliver pathway helps reduce the systemic pressure that can contribute to repeated respiratory flare-ups.
Because ultimately, weโre not just looking to calm the reactionโฆ weโre looking to understand why the system is reacting in the first place.
If this is sounding familiar, and youโre starting to see the pattern in your own horse, youโre not imagining it - and youโre not alone.

Itโs not just about the pollen โ or about just suppressing the symptoms. Itโs about understanding why the system is reacting the way it is - because once you see that, everything starts to make a lot more sense.
The good news? This kind of histamine overreaction isnโt permanent. Once the hindgut is stabilised, the biome restored, and the liver detox pathways are functioning properly, histamine levels naturally regulate. The key is addressing KPU at the root - not just managing symptoms.
