Schools go back in Hampshire this week, and September is when childhood asthma attacks spike.

Asthma + Lung UK analysed NHS England hospital data covering 2020 to 2024. In September 2024, admissions for asthma attacks among children aged 5 to 14 were more than five times higher than in August.

New classrooms pass colds around quickly. Preventer inhalers also tend to slip during six weeks away from the school routine.

If your child has asthma, four things worth doing this week:

• Get back on the preventer inhaler exactly as prescribed. It protects by building up over time, so gaps leave your child exposed.

• Watch them take it. Technique drifts over the summer, and a spacer helps most children get the full dose in.

• Give school an up to date written asthma action plan, and check your child can reach a reliever inhaler during the day.

• Book an asthma review if they have not had one in the past year, or if they have been using the reliever more than usual.

To book a review, call 0118 981 4166 between 8am and 6:30pm Monday to Friday, or use our website - www.tadleymedical.co.uk

If your child is fighting for breath, too breathless to talk or eat, or the reliever is not helping, call 999. That is an emergency and should not wait for an appointment.

Bookings for this year’s flu vaccine are now open for those who are eligible.

Flu can be very serious for children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with long-term health conditions. Last year, it was estimated that the flu vaccine prevented 104,000 unnecessary hospitalisations.

If you’re eligible, you can now book your flu vaccination online or through the NHS App.
