Unlike your circulatory system, which has the heart, your lymphatic system relies on several mechanisms to help move lymph through its vessels.

These include:

• Muscle contractions as you move
• Changes in pressure as you breathe
• Contractions within lymphatic vessels
• One-way valves that help keep lymph moving in the right direction

It’s one of the reasons something as simple as walking and moving your body regularly matters.

Your lymphatic system is working quietly behind the scenes every day, helping maintain fluid balance and supporting immune function.

The more you understand your body, the better equipped you are to care for it. 🌿

Two people can walk through my door feeling stressed, tired or tense, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they need the same treatment.

That’s one of the things I love about Ayurveda.

It takes a more individual approach, looking beyond a single symptom and considering the person as a whole.

My Ayurvedic treatments include techniques such as Deep Tissue and Marma Massage, with therapeutic medicated oils used across the body, face and head depending on the treatment.

It’s not simply about having a massage. It’s about creating a treatment experience centred around you.

A more considered approach to wellness, in the calm of the Starling Holistic sanctuary. 🌿

Why does your body love routine, and what does it have to do with better sleep?

Your body has its own internal 24-hour clock, known as your circadian rhythm, which helps regulate many of the processes that happen throughout your day.

From your sleep-wake cycle and hormone release to body temperature, digestion, alertness and energy, your circadian rhythm helps your body anticipate when it’s time to be active and when it’s time to wind down.

One of the strongest signals influencing this rhythm is light.

Exposure to natural light in the morning helps signal to your body that it’s time to be awake and alert. As the day gets darker, your body receives signals that help prepare you for rest and sleep.

This is why your daily routine can have such an important relationship with how well you sleep.

Getting natural light earlier in the day, keeping your sleep and wake times fairly consistent and reducing exposure to bright light later in the evening can all help reinforce your body’s natural rhythm.

And sleep is about far more than simply “switching off”. It’s an important period for physical restoration, memory and many of the processes that help your body and mind function well the following day.

Good sleep starts long before your head hits the pillow.

Wellness isn’t only about what happens in the treatment room. It’s also about understanding your body and the everyday habits that can support it. 🌿

Feeling tight all the time?
Your fascia could be telling you something.

Do you ever feel tight through your neck, shoulders, jaw or hips, no matter how much you stretch or foam roll?

Your fascia, the connective tissue that runs throughout your body can be influenced by things like movement, tension and stress. When you’ve been feeling stressed or overwhelmed for a while, your body can sometimes hold onto that tension too.

That’s why simply stretching more isn’t always the answer for you. Sometimes your body needs a chance to slow down, feel supported and properly relax.

Treatments like Ayurvedic Abhyanga Massage can be a lovely way to do just that. Warm, herb-infused oils and rhythmic massage help you unwind, soothe tired muscles and encourage a sense of calm throughout the body.

So if that tight feeling keeps coming back, perhaps your body is asking for something different.

Have you ever felt exhausted, but still found it difficult to properly switch off?

Your nervous system could be playing a part. 🌿

Think of your nervous system as your body's communication network. It's constantly receiving information from inside and outside your body and helping decide how to respond.

When we feel stressed or under pressure, our sympathetic nervous system helps prepare us for action, often known as our “fight or flight” response.

Then there's the parasympathetic nervous system, often described as “rest and digest”. This helps the body slow down and supports functions such as digestion, recovery and relaxation.

Both are completely normal and necessary. The important part is being able to move between these states rather than feeling like you're constantly stuck in “go” mode.

Gentle movement, breathing, massage, time outdoors, and simply creating space to slow down can all help support this natural balance.

Sometimes your body is asking for a little less doing and a little more being. 🤍

You might have heard lymphatic massage described as a way to “detox” your body… but that’s not quite how it works. 🤎

Your body already has some pretty amazing systems in place to deal with waste, including your liver, kidneys, digestive system and skin.

Your lymphatic system has its own important job. Think of it as a transport network, helping move excess fluid, proteins, immune cells and waste products back into circulation so your body can process them.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle treatment that can support healthy lymph flow and help with fluid retention and swelling, leaving you feeling lighter and less puffy.

No dramatic detox claims. Just a gentle treatment designed to support a system your body already has. 🌿

Many people have never heard of lipoedema or lymphoedema, and because the names sound so similar, they're often confused.

While both conditions can affect the legs and cause discomfort, they have different causes and require different approaches to treatment.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised treatment that can help support the lymphatic system. For people living with lymphoedema, it can encourage lymph fluid to move more effectively, helping to reduce swelling and improve comfort. For those with lipoedema, MLD may help reduce fluid build-up, ease feelings of heaviness and discomfort, and support overall wellbeing as part of a wider treatment plan.

Understanding your body is the first step towards finding the right support, and with the right approach, it's possible to feel more comfortable, more mobile and more confident. 💚

One of the most beautiful principles of Ayurveda is that no two people are exactly the same.

Ayurveda describes three natural energies, known as doshas, that help explain our physical, mental and emotional characteristics. We all have a unique combination of these three doshas, which is why what works for one person may not work for another.

💨 Vata is linked to air and space. People with a dominant Vata dosha are often creative, energetic and quick-thinking, but when out of balance, they may experience anxiety, dry skin, poor sleep or digestive changes.

🔥 Pitta is associated with fire and water. Pitta types are often driven, focused and organised. When imbalanced, they may feel irritable, overheated or prone to inflammation.

🌿 Kapha is connected to earth and water. Kapha individuals are typically calm, caring and steady. When out of balance, they may experience sluggishness, congestion or fluid retention.

The aim of Ayurveda isn't to change who you are, it's to help restore balance so you can feel your best.
