People often ask if large scale Polynesian Tribal tattoos can be completed in one sitting.

The simple answer is: No.

Realistically, Polynesian Tribal is a long, detailed process that takes time. Every artist works differently — some are faster, some slower — but most large pieces will require multiple sessions to achieve the best result properly.

The Process

1 — Freehand Design & Flow
The design is usually drawn directly onto the body to suit the natural flow of the arm or leg. This part takes time because placement and balance need to be right.

2 — Line Work
Polynesian work contains a lot of precise lines and patterns, which is already a lengthy stage on its own.

3 — Black Packing
This is where the solid black is packed in. Pain levels usually increase significantly during this stage.

4 — Shading & Finishing Details
Final details, clean-up, and shading complete the piece.

For bigger Polynesian Tribal pieces, it’s best to take it one session at a time. Progress over speed will always give a better result.

Numbing cream is available online (Extreme Numbing Cream) and can help make sessions more manageable if used correctly.

Reminder on numbing cream:
All numbing creams work differently and can vary from person to person. For maximum effect, moisturise the area daily leading up to your appointment.

🔴 IMPORTANT NOTE:
PLEASE READ THE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WRITTEN ON THE NUMBING CREAM PACKAGING. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS CAREFULLY IN CASE YOU MAY BE ALLERGIC TO ANY OF THEM. IF UNSURE, PLEASE SEEK ADVICE FROM YOUR LOCAL GP OR PHARMACIST.
ALSO, DO A PATCH TEST PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT.

On the day of your appointment, well-moisturised skin absorbs the numbing cream much better. Make sure to stay hydrated, eat properly beforehand, and get a decent night’s sleep — all of these help massively during the session.

For us Pacific Islanders, extra moisturising is especially important, particularly when kava creates that extra thin dry layer on the skin 👀. When the tattoo needle hits dry skin, it can feel more painful.

Wear comfortable clothing on the day, especially for longer sessions. Bring headphones so you can listen to music or watch a film to help keep your mind occupied.

Be mindful of all these small things, as they genuinely help. Lastly, mentally prepare yourself and just take it as it comes — don’t listen too much to horror stories from others.
Everyone has different pain thresholds
