What is Effortless Meditation?
Effortless, in the way I teach, doesn’t necessarily mean doing nothing.
If the mind is racing, sitting down and trying to do absolutely nothing usually just means that we will get swept away by a storm of thoughts.
Instead, I offer an invitation to look at "effortless" as a kind of attitude. An attitude of letting go. A gentle willingness to give up control.
Many of us are used to concentration practices…focusing the mind like a laser beam on the breath or a mantra to try and force the mind to be quiet. While that has its place, that constant straining to achieve a state of peace eventually becomes very tiresome. We find ourselves working hard just to sit still, and the controlling mind simply gets in its own way.
The shift into effortless awareness happens when we finally release the grip of trying to do it right, trying to be perfect, or trying to achieve a quiet mind. It’s in the resting.
When we let go of the effort to control our experience, we are allowing everything to be exactly as it is. Our attention, which usually sits tightly behind the eyes, scanning and looking at things, begins to soften. As the trying hard releases its grip, space naturally opens, dropping lower into the body, settling into a sense of deep rest.
Awareness simply reveals itself. Its already here, already present. It is warm, inclusive, and spacious, just a simple, quiet noticing of whatever is here. At its heart, this awareness is awake and beautifully empty. Not empty like a dark, lonely hole, but clear and still, free from the weight of constant thought, emotion, and sensation.
This emptiness is everything you are, without everything you think you are.
