Reminder: having low ferritin doesn’t necessarily mean you’re low in iron.
It’s possible to have low ferritin while your serum iron levels are normal—these are two different issues that require different approaches.
Before jumping into taking more synthetic iron, it’s important to understand this:
If your serum iron and transferrin levels are normal but ferritin is low, the problem isn’t a lack of iron—it’s an issue with how your body stores it. That distinction changes how you should treat it.
This situation is often seen with gut-related problems. In early stages or with ongoing mild gut issues, the body may have trouble storing iron properly, even if you’re getting enough from your diet.
A true iron deficiency anemia typically includes:
• Low ferritin
• Low serum iron
• Low transferrin saturation
• Symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, and weakness
If your situation doesn’t match this full pattern, it’s worth investigating further instead of automatically taking synthetic iron supplements.
