Falls are one of the most common causes of injury in older adults and can have a significant impact on independence. Reduced muscle strength, stiffness in the joints, slower reactions and loss of confidence with walking can all gradually increase the risk of falling.
After a fall, many people become less active because they feel worried about falling again. Unfortunately, reduced activity can lead to further loss of strength and balance, making the problem worse over time.
There are several things that can help reduce falls risk, including:
• Maintaining leg strength through regular movement or exercise
• Practising balance and coordination activities
• Making sure the home environment is free from trip hazards
• Wearing supportive footwear
• Seeking assessment if walking, balance or confidence has changed
Physiotherapy can play an important role in assessing mobility, identifying specific risk factors and helping people improve strength, balance and confidence with everyday movements.
I’m Animesh, a private physiotherapist with over 12 years of NHS experience working across hospital, rehabilitation, care home and community services. Part of my previous role involved training NHS staff across South Yorkshire in falls awareness and prevention.
Through Village Physio I now work with older adults across South Yorkshire, supporting mobility, balance and rehabilitation in their own homes. Please get in touch if you need any help.
