The inhalation of smoke from herbs has also traditionally been used for health complaints, specifically lung support. At Wight Herbal Medicine we stock a range of specially crafted blends that can be burnt in a diffuser or smoked in place of to***co.

Discover the significance of smoke cleansing, which aromatic herbs to use, and how to make your own aromatic herb bundle to burn as incense and aromatic smoke.

Had a great time sharing the history of Herbal Medicine in Roman Times at St. St Helens Historical Society Isle of Wight. Later on in the year I will be sharing a more general history of Herbal Medicine at St Helen's Horticultural Society group. In the meantime, watch this space for more planned talks and workshops!

The understandable excitement of the AGM was too much for some, so we didn't get a full house this time. Our attendees that were there for the second half were very attentive to our speaker Lucy Padina of Wight Herbal Medicine. Romans and Their Herbs had many surprises in that we are still using many of the same remedies now as we were 2,000 years ago. Much discussion afterwards, and lots of notes taken. For anyone interested Lucy's website is www.wightherbalmedicine.co.uk

Protein Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are so commonly prescribed and it is something we see alot in medical herbalism practice as people are keen to come off them but struggle with side effects, specifically rebound effects. As with many other medications that are prescribed, people are typically not informed in advance of potential side effects, dependency and longer term risks. This does not enable people to make an informed decision about how to address health issues they have. Although correlation does not equal causation and there are always many independent variables in research that we need to consider when drawing conclusions, it is important to be aware of potential risks when taking medications long term.

Concern has arisen in the last decade that proton pump inhibitors may be associated with increased dementia risk. In this article, Dr Andrade discusses the evidence.

Many traditions both in the West and worldwide have utilised the burning of herbs medicinally and spiritually. For example, Native Americans incorporated the smoking of to***co into scared rituals and ceremonies. They also used Lobelia infalata (a herb used for lungs today) to promote open airways and soothe respiratory issues and it was often burned and the smoke inhaled or smoked directly. In the late 19th and early 20th century, literature details the use of "anti-asthma" ci******es (containing lung supportive herbs) used to positive effect; although the sale of these disappeared under the weight of anxieties around this method of ingestion as well as the rise in pharmaceutical treatments being promoted. Interestingly the anticholinergic bronchodilators used in inhaler form were derived from synthesised datura stramonium, which was one of the key herbs used in these herbal ci******es. Apart from lung support, the burning of herbs was often also used traditionally to cleanse spaces and contemporary studies support the traditional use of burning herbs for reducing airborne bacteria. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17913417/. Whilst noone is advocating people take up smoking, from a harm reduction/minimisation perspective, herbs can be usefully applied as a smoking cessation tool; as well as being used for specific complaints. At Wight Herbal Medicine we have a range of smoking blends for sale at just £8 per tin.

This study represents a comprehensive analysis and scientific validation of our ancient knowledge about the effect of ethnopharmacological aspects of natural products' smoke for therapy and health care on airborne bacterial composition and dynamics, using the Biolog microplate panels and Microlog da...
