A quick reminder for anyone planning a sea swim. 🌊

The Safer Seas & Rivers app is a useful tool, but it's worth remembering that some beaches and swim spots used regularly throughout the year may not always show alerts outside the official bathing water season. That doesn't necessarily mean there haven't been recent releases nearby.

The two screenshots are a good example. Whilst a local St Austell Bay beach Polkerris may not always show information in the app outside the monitored season, there are currently releases showing on the South West Water live map in the surrounding area.

It's also important to remember that water quality isn't just affected by storm overflows. Agricultural run off, road run-off, surface water drainage and recent heavy rainfall can all impact water quality, even when no discharge alerts are showing.

Before swimming, it's worth checking:
βœ… South West Water discharge maps
βœ… Recent rainfall in the area
βœ… Local water conditions and water clarity
βœ… Any streams or outflows entering the sea near your swim spot

None of this is about stopping people swimming. It's about making informed decisions with the information available, especially as many of us swim year round at locations that may not be monitored or displayed in the same way outside the bathing season.

Stay safe, trust your judgement, and if in doubt, do a bit of extra checking before getting in. πŸ’™πŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ

One of my favourite times is Friday morning sunrise in Penzance.
Today I was transfixed not by the sunrise but the sound of the sea dragging back over the pebbles.
Amazing what you can hear if you just stop still for a minute and listen ❀️🌊

It’s Raining here in St Austell, and has been for most of the night, which can mean only one thing! At some time soon, if the rain doesn’t stop, the storm overflow will release into our rivers and sea, lots of πŸ’©

It’s infuriating and all sorts of wrong but at least we know (in the main, call me a cynic but I have a sneaky suspicion it’s more than we’re told). 😑

South west water who are the perpetrators of the releases here in Cornwall, kindly give us a map 🀨 ( I’m being sarcastic, there’s nothing about our welfare here, they’re required to do so by law) so at least we know when and when not to swim. 🌊🏊🏻🌊

If you save it to your Home Screen it will open like an app so you can monitor in real time.

Today is πŸ’™ World Mental Health Day πŸ’™

There was a time when I got into cold water for one reason and one reason only... my mental health.

I wasn't chasing distances, events or achievements. I wasn't trying to prove anything. I simply needed something that helped me cope, something that quietened the noise in my head and gave me a moment of peace. I can honestly say if I hadn’t have stepped into the cold I wouldn’t be here today ❀️

The first time I stepped into the sea, it felt like everything stopped for a few minutes. The worries, the pressure, the overthinking. All that mattered was my breathing, the cold water and getting through those first few moments. 🌊🏊🏻🌊

What started as a way of surviving slowly became something I looked forward to on the good day as well as the bad . The sea taught me resilience. It gave me space to think, space to heal and space to reconnect with myself when life felt overwhelming.

Then something unexpected happened.

I realised there were so many others who needed exactly what I had found. People looking for connection, friendship, confidence, support, or simply a reason to get out of bed and do something positive for themselves.

Supported by so many people I began to developed an idea and that's how Salty Swims began.

What started from my own need to support my mental health grew into a community built on kindness, encouragement and belonging. A place where people could turn up exactly as they are. No pressure. No judgement. Just people supporting people, one swim at a time.

Watching Salty Swims grow has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. Not because of numbers, but because of the stories. The friendships formed. The confidence gained. The people who tell me a swim changed their day, their week, their life.

The sea didn't solve all my problems, and it won't solve everyone's. But it gave me something priceless: hope, perspective and connection. Through Salty Swims, I've been lucky enough to see those same things touch the lives of so many others too.

So this World Mental Health Day, I'm grateful.

Grateful for every person who took that first nervous step into the water. Grateful for every sunrise swim, every laugh in the car park, every hug after a tough day, every person who has supported Salty Swims, and every member of this amazing community.

What began as me trying to look after my own mental health became something far bigger than I ever imagined.

And for that, I will always be thankful. πŸ’™πŸŒŠ

We often use apps to support our decision making when planning a swim.

One of our favourites is Windfinder. It shows a visual representation of which way the wind is going and has been invaluable to us when planning lessons and classes. πŸ’¨ 🌬️

Offshore this morning in Penzance so although it is quite a strong wind it’s flattening out the swell and the breakers making Penzance accessible for us today ❀️🌊🏊🏻🌊❀️
