Today is winter solstice, which marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. This is because on this day, the Earth’s tilt is at its farthest from the Sun, creating the deepest shadow.

These were taken one day after winter solstice last year, when these rare nacreous iridescent clouds made an appearance in Saltburn-by-the-sea 🌈🦄

A reminder that beauty can be found even during the darker days.

I’ll be snuggling up and soaking up loved ones for the rest of the Winter. I hope you will be too 🙏🏼

Every single one of you started as just a single cell and developed into trillions of cells, and all of this happened inside your Mother who carried you for 9 months.

You entered the world using her as your portal, and you continued to grow through the milk you were fed and her love, care and attention (shoutout to the Father’s too, I’m just emphasising the Mother role in this post).

Being a Mother is powerful but intense role to play. It’s one that fills you with utter awe at the possibility of growing another Human, but it also depletes you, and takes quite literally all your nutrients away. To grow a life inside of you and then to sustain that life as they grow outside the womb, takes a lot.

Be proud of your Body (or your Mother’s body) for being a vehicle for your child’s, or for your existence. To me, this is where magic truly exists 🙏🏼🔮

My life over the last few months…

Has been made up of constantly sharing my energy, my love, my body, my time and my physical space in every sense (including my sleep space).

Over the course of each day and moment to moment, I continue trying to make a conscious choice to surrender to it all.

The utter sleep deprived nights nights that feel like they will never end, expressing breast milk (which is a whole other labour of love I discovered), the struggle to find time at home to cook a nice meal or to simply sort out a cupboard, the craving to have 1-2 hours where I can immerse in something completely un-interrupted...

The polarity of Motherhood is strikingly real, but it’s also what keeps me going.

A completely broken night catching 8 separate fragments of sleep totalling 2-4 hours max, and wondering how I will find the energy to get through the day. But then waking up to feel a small warm body cuddled into mine, hear babbling and “Mama” seeing a big smile beaming back at me.

Feeling like I work through the day and through the night relentlessly and wondering if anyone notices or spares any thought, gratitude, or empathy for the constant selflessness Morherhood involves, but without judgement.

But seeing his smile light up when I enter a room, or kissing his warm soft head, and feeling him relax completely and sink into my arms when I pick him up to comfort him is sometimes the only validation I need.

Is it hard? Yes. Has my life changed completely? Yes. Do I have time to do much else except be a Mother? Not really. But is it worth it? Absolutely yes.

I breathe. I am present. I surrender. Knowing that with his constant growth, in a heartbeat everything as I know it will change. And I will miss it.
