DISCUSSION: THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISES

Speakers : RCN Mental Health Nurse - Kate Edwards (Personal Capacity)
BMA Mental Health Consultant

Topic: SSONHS MEETING
Time: Oct 11, 2023 07:00 PM London

More and more people are suffering from common mental health distress, but the availability and accessibility of therapeutic help via the NHS Talking Therapies (NHS TT) has become severely limited, including in some cases a denial of care.

One in five women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or within the first year after having a baby. And maternal death due to mental health problems is increasing. Su***de remains the leading cause of death in the first year after birth. Yet, in England, only 16% of specialist perinatal mental health community teams meet the minimum standard of care set by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

More and more adults and children in the UK continue to experience difficulties with their mental health. NHS services are in a state of crisis. NHS data shows over a million adults, and rising, use mental health services every month. Among children and young people, numbers are rising alarmingly quickly. In April 2016, 96,789 children and young people came into contact with mental health services. Fast forward to April 2022, this number had risen to 355,807.

Come along to our meeting to discuss these important issues. ALL WELCOME
