What is the difference ?
One is a callous and one is a verruca.

What is a callous ?
A thickened/ hardened area of skin, it occurs when there has been pressure or friction on an area. It could be a result of a foot deformation, ill fitting shoes, or the way you walk.

Are they painful?
They can be, it depends on where they are situated, also if the friction has developed into a corn or not.

How do you get rid of a callous?
They is lots of differing research and opinions as to whether you should remove callous. It is a protective layer of an area that has had more force through it.
You can be seen by a Podiatrist to assess your biomechanics, how you walk and put pressure through a certain part of your foot.
A podiatrist can also “debride” the area.

What is a verruca ?
It’s a HPV virus 🦠 that has been triggered and can present itself on the foot.

Are they painful?
They can be, but not everyone describes pain as the same. If you pinch the area it will hurt.

How can you get rid of it?
See your local Podiatrist to make sure it is a verruca, you can also use over the counter treatments from seeing a pharmacist.
A Podiatrist can debride and investigate and educate you on recommended treatments. The aim would be to initiate an immune response for your own immune system to fight it off. This is aided by a range of techniques and products depending on each individual.

This is an ingrown nail, Post conservative treatment.

What is an ingrowing nail ?
Onychocryptosis is the word used for this in Podiatry.

An ingrown nail can present itself for different reasons, mainly what we are concentrating on today will be footwear!

Too narrow of a toe box, fashion shoes with the point, football boots, tight fitting shoes, these are a few contributing factors to ingrowing nails.

They can carry out diabetic assessments on the feet, biomechanical assessment with orthotic reccomedations,enucliation of corns using a blade, fissure and callus debridement, verruca, fungal treatment and Ingrowing nail care to say the least.
Podiatrists are also medically trained.
