🧠 NEURODIVERGENT MINDS: YOUR BODY KEEPS THE SCORE

Many people with ADHD and Autism spend years masking, overthinking, managing sensory overload, and pushing through exhaustion.

The nervous system keeps score.

Over time, chronic stress can contribute to:

⚠️ Anxiety
⚠️ Burnout
⚠️ Sleep Problems
⚠️ IBS
⚠️ Migraines
⚠️ Brain Fog
⚠️ Chronic Pain
⚠️ Fatigue

Research is increasingly finding that conditions such as Fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, Hypermobility and POTS are more common in neurodivergent individuals.

You are not broken.

You may simply have spent too long in survival mode.

The good news? The nervous system can learn to feel safe again.

Through Hypnotherapy, EMDR, CBT and Neurodiversity-informed therapy, it is possible to reduce overwhelm, improve sleep, build confidence, process stress more effectively, and help your mind and body work together rather than against each other.

Understanding your brain isn’t about finding excuses. It’s about finding solutions.

Know Who You’re Working With

Jason Firmager
Therapist | Speaker
Founder of Mentalk Health

People often ask me what I actually do… and honestly, the answer is probably a mixture of therapist, mentor, speaker, coach and someone people turn to during difficult periods in life.

For over 2 decades, I’ve worked with people from all walks of life through therapy, coaching, behavioural change and mental health support.

Recognised for both private practice and community mental health work, I’ve also been honoured through award-winning work connected to therapy, wellbeing and charitable support initiatives.

I specialise in areas such as trauma, anxiety, confidence, neurodiversity, ADHD, emotional wellbeing, mindset and personal transformation — using approaches including hypnotherapy, CBT, NLP, EMDR, psychotherapy and wellbeing-based interventions.

Alongside private practice, I also founded Mentalk Health — a community-driven men’s mental health charity that started in Sittingbourne and has since expanded into Ashford and Faversham.

Mentalk Health provides safe spaces, talking groups, wellbeing initiatives, outreach projects, education and ongoing community support for men who may be struggling with mental health, isolation, pressure, trauma, addiction, loss or life challenges.

To date, Mentalk Health has supported over 1,600 men through direct groups, outreach, education and community-based support initiatives — and has helped save many lives through early intervention, connection and ongoing support.

I also work with organisations, schools and businesses delivering:
• Mental health talks
• Neurodiversity awareness
• Workplace wellbeing sessions
• Staff support initiatives
• Wellbeing programmes
• Personal development and resilience training

Whether you are looking for one-to-one therapy, workplace wellbeing support, public speaking, group sessions or community collaboration — I’m always happy to have a conversation.

What if the parts of yourself you’ve spent years trying to “fix” were never flaws to begin with?

Over the years, I’ve realised that one of the areas I naturally seem to specialise in and deeply understand is neurodivergence, particularly ADHD and Autism, alongside trauma, identity and human behaviour.

Not just through study and qualifications…
But through lived experience, years of working with people, deep observation and understanding patterns many others miss.

I’ve come to believe that human beings are not all designed the same.

We have evolved with different ways of thinking, processing, feeling and functioning. Many of the struggles neurodivergent people face are not because they are “broken”, but because the environments around them do not match how they are wired.

When natural traits are misunderstood, suppressed, misplaced or left without purpose, it can slowly lead to anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, isolation and mental decline.

A huge part of my work also centres around deep childhood wounds, inner child healing, trauma, identity and helping people reconnect with who they truly are beneath survival mode.

I’ve seen time and time again that the very traits, emotions and survival patterns people develop through trauma can later become strengths when understood and channelled correctly.

Misplaced energy can consume a person.
But directed energy can transform a life.

What many people see as their curse can often become their greatest gift when given meaning, structure, purpose and understanding.

Part of my role is helping people stop fighting themselves, understand their mind without shame, and learn how to use that energy for growth, resilience, confidence, leadership and transformation rather than self-destruction.

The issue is often not the individual.
The issue is the environment they are trying to survive in.

If any of this resonates with you, and you feel ready to understand yourself on a deeper level, you are welcome to reach out.

Mindset Tip of the Week 💙

The Power of Journaling

I often talk about the importance of journaling.

Putting your thoughts and feelings into words does more than help you reflect — it can actually help calm the brain.

There’s a part of the brain called the amygdala, often described as the brain’s alarm system. When emotions feel overwhelming, this area becomes more active and can trigger stress, fear, or anxiety.

Research shows that simply naming or writing down how you feel can reduce that emotional reaction and activate the part of the brain responsible for thinking clearly and regulating emotions.

In simple terms:
Writing helps the brain move from reacting… to processing.

Journaling also helps organise thoughts that may feel chaotic. Once experiences are put into words, the mind can begin to make sense of them.

In many ways, writing things down is like placing a bookmark in a book.

You know exactly where you left off. You don’t panic trying to find your place again.

If everything stays in your head, you can end up searching through the same thoughts and emotions over and over again.

Remember — this is also a classic CBT approach:

A thought leads to an emotion.
An emotion often leads to a behaviour.

If we keep replaying the same thoughts in our head, we keep reliving the same emotions too.

Writing them down helps you step back from them instead of being stuck inside them.

It also helps during those 3am wake-ups many of us experience.

Instead of lying there worrying that you’re losing control of your thoughts, you simply write the thought down.

Like placing a marker in a book — you know it’s safe, stored, and waiting for you when you come back to it with a clearer mind.

But journaling isn’t just for the tough days.

Write when life is going well too.

Write about:
• The habits and routines helping you
• The things you are grateful for
• The goals you are working toward

Because as human beings we need a sense of purpose and hope. When we are moving towards something meaningful, life often feels clearer.

When life gets heavy — and thinking clearly becomes harder — you already have a written blueprint of what was working.

Ask yourself:
• Am I still doing those things?
• Am I still following those habits?
• Am I still moving toward my goals?

If not, go back to them.

Almost like paint by numbers — follow the pattern that helped you feel well before.

If you’ve never tried journaling, start simple today:

• Take 5 minutes
• Write how you feel right now
• Write one thing that went well today
• Write one small goal for tomorrow

Don’t worry about grammar — just get it out of your head and onto paper.

Sometimes clarity starts with a pen… or simply a notes app on your phone.

Even in the worst of times,
I refuse to be beaten.

Sometimes that refusal
is the purpose.

Ever have those moments where it feels like your acts of generosity and kindness mostly go unseen?

Do you always feel like you give so much of yourself, freely and unconditionally, to others, yet you remain unnoticed?

Let me share something important with you, for those who need to hear this… I see you. I want to give you the acknowledgment that often goes unreceived.

I want you to know, you are amazing:

• You have a heart that cares more deeply than most people even conceive is possible.
• You notice the subtle signs that others neglect—the unspoken word, the slight changes, the depth of a person that lies hidden beneath the surface.
• You are both loyally devoted and guardedly protective of those you cherish.
• You own the courage to feel, even when feelings usher you towards chaos and suffering.
• Even throughout the most challenging and somber moments of your own existence, you've been a beacon of light for others.
• Let me express my gratitude towards you, for everything you contribute to this world.

Now, if I may gently point towards one sphere where growth could be fostered:

At times, you bear an immense burden of trying to be flawless for the people you love. You are so tenaciously committed to respecting and honouring others—ensuring you don't cause them any harm, always striving to make the correct decisions—that there's a tendency for you to internalise this weight, leading you to be excessively critical of your own self.

While it's indeed admirable that you aspire to be virtuous, it's important to understand that you're not obliged to meet perfection to be worthy of affection. Even in your vulnerability—when you're fatigued, overwhelmed with emotions, uncertain or have made mistakes—you're deserving of love.

You don't have to justify your heart to anyone else who truly sees you. Your luminosity is already glowing brilliantly. If one were to propose an area where you could refine, it would be in trusting that your blemishes and flaws are an integral part of your individuality, what makes you uniquely spectacular.

Your love and acceptance do not occur despite your imperfections; they happen through these apparent flaws, and even because of them.

For those who are struck by this message:
I am incredibly proud of you, exactly as you are. I wouldn't desire to change the essence of your being, not for anything in this world.

Never underestimate the impact you have. Stay strong. The significant work you accomplish often extends far beyond your comprehension. Thank you for being you, for bearing the light-instilling torch for others, regardless of your personal struggles, sacrifices and wounds.

NEVER…forget how extraordinary you are. 😉

I wanted to share some important information with you about stress, something that's often overlooked.

We often speak of stress as if it's a fleeting moment, but what you might not know is that according to neuroscience, if left unchecked, stress can become a lifelong struggle.

Can you believe that stress can reshape your brain, body, and even your genes? Here's how that works:

1. Stress triggers the fear circuitry in your brain. When you're stressed, your amygdala sounds the alarm and your brain sends a signal to your body, making you feel unsafe. This sets off a chain of events from your hypothalamus to your pituitary gland, then to your adrenals, resulting in a surge of cortisol. This can be useful in short term but dangerous when it's persistent.

2. Stress floods your brain with chemicals. High cortisol levels disrupt your prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and the levels of dopamine and serotonin in your brain, affecting your ability to make decisions, learn, remember, and stabilize your mood. Your brain chemistry is altered.

3. Stress changes how your genes behave. Through a process known as epigenetics, chronic stress doesn't alter your DNA, but it does modify how your genes function. This means that genes responsible for mood, inflammation, and brain plasticity become dysregulated and can potentially pass this 'epigenetic signature' to future generations.

4. Persisting stress can make your body and brain normalize this imbalance. Under constant stress, the corrective system ceases to be effective, and the chemical imbalances become your new normal.

From all these, what started as stress might progress to Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, PTSD, autoimmune conditions, or cardiometabolic diseases. At this stage, therapy alone may not suffice. It could require medication, structured rewiring of the brain, and long-term support.

So, when should we intervene? Recognising early signs like sleep issues, irritability, withdrawal, and reduction in joy can deter progressing from mere stress to severe mental health disorders. Equipping oneself with mental health education, resilience techniques, mindfulness, self-awareness, and stress recovery practices can nip the problem in the bud.

Our understanding of mental health needs to evolve from the notion of treating either symptom or cause to treating both. It means not only employing talk therapy or medication alone but employing them in tandem. It entails treating both the emotional and biological aspects and working on prevention along with healing.

Remember, stress isn't just mental – it's encoded in your genes, present in your bloodstream and manifest in your brain. And without early intervention, it becomes your biology. I believe it's important to disrupt this process before it's too late.

If you would like help managing stress and learning more about yourself.
