This is your friendly reminder, to check when your horse last had a dental, as we all know life can get hectic and it can be easy to lose track of time before realizing they are overdue! 🗓️

Horses, ponies and donkeys are incredibly good at hiding dental pain and undiagnosed dental problems are a major welfare concern. Signs of discomfort often don't appear until the issue has become much more serious. That's why regular dental checks matter so much and although re-examination dates are dependant on your equines individual needs we generally recommend the following guidelines:

🦷 Young horses (2-8yrs): Every 6 months. They are shedding caps, erupting permanent teeth, and rapid eruption often causes sharp points, ulceration and bite abnormalities.
🦷 Adult horses: Typically every 12 months, though some benefit from every 6 months depending on their dental conformation and workload.
🦷 Senior horses (late teens +): Every 6 months. Aging can result in mobile and expiring teeth, periodontal disease, infundibular caries and other issues that require closer monitoring.

Routine dental treatment for the lovely Milly at Rand Farm Park 🫏🦷

Did you know that studies have shown that over 73% of donkeys in the UK have dental disorders. Research has highlighted a significant decline in dental health between the ages of 10 and 15, meaning many donkeys may already be struggling long before obvious signs appear.
Donkeys commonly suffer from sharp enamel points, diastemata, periodontal disease, abnormal or uneven wear, displaced or loose teeth, fractures, caries and conditions such as EOTRH. Despite how painful these issues can be, donkeys are prey animals and are instinctively good at hiding discomfort, so dental disease can progress unnoticed.

By providing routine dental check-ups every 6-12 months from a young age, we can reduce the risk of severe dental disease later in life and improve donkey's quality of life.

To book an appointment for your horse, pony or donkey please contact us on 07961291014, PM or on www.epequinedentistry.com
