Urgh, food noise.

Can I eat this?
But I already had...
Is it too early/late/much/little?
Is it fattening?
Is it too processed?
What about the sugar?
Am I really hungry?
What if someone makes a comment?
I'll just have a taste
What should I order?
Can I have dessert?
Are bananas really ok?*

For me it was always cheap pastry slices with questionable meat fillings, naff crisps (onion rings, anyone?), big double choc chip cookies and pepperoni pizzas.

These were the kind of foods that once I'd had a taste, I felt I couldn't stop until I'd polished off the lot.

I always thought it was because I lacked willpower, was greedy or had no self-control.

But it's not about that at all.

Our brains are hard-wired to find this stuff irresistible and once we know that, it's much easier to be kind and to see things from a different angle.

And to make more of a conscious choice to eat them or not.

When you're taking weight loss medication, the results might be pretty dramatic.

Losing weight quickly can mean that you're losing muscle mass as well as body fat.

Along with risks associated with not eating properly due to a reduced appetite, this can mean that you reach your goal weight finding yourself weaker than before. Very much not what you deserve after all that.

The super combination of strength training and a healthy diet (including a decent protein intake) can help to mitigate this loss of muscle.

Doing this from the start of your treatment is brilliant, but it's never too late to get going.

We use food for all sorts of reasons and that's generally a good thing. To show love, to celebrate, to nourish ourselves... all wonderful and positive drivers for eating.

When food is our go-to resource for pretty much everything life throws our way, it can start to become a problem.

Traditional weight loss diets look at trying to manage the consequences of overeating but they tend not to address the cause. Which is why every time we fall off the diet wagon, we hop straight back on a different one and continue the cycle. Nothing is changing in the background, so we keep repeating the same pattern.

Understanding why we eat the way we do is a vital step for breaking the yo-yo cycle and achieving lasting weight loss results. Reflect with curiosity and kindness, never judgement or criticism, and see what you find out.
