If you're fed up of feeling hormonal, or just 'not right' there maybe some things you can change in your house and life which may help you feel better.
๐ง What are endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with your hormone system โ they can:
Mimic hormones (especially estrogen)
Block hormones
Mess with production, transport, or breakdown
Your endocrine system = your bodyโs messaging system (mood, metabolism, reproductive cycles, stress, sleep, all of it).
๐จ Major Endocrine Disruptors (Common Ones)
๐งด 1. BPA (Bisphenol A)
Found in: plastic bottles, food containers, can linings
Known for: mimicking estrogen
๐ Also look out for:
BPS / BPF (the โBPA-freeโ replacementsโฆ often similar effects)
๐งผ 2. Phthalates
Found in: perfumes, cosmetics, shampoos, air fresheners, plastics. Often just listed as โfragranceโ
๐ Effects:
Hormone disruption
Linked to reproductive and metabolic issues
๐งด 3. Parabens
Found in: skincare, makeup, lotions
Used as preservatives
๐ Mimic weak estrogen โ can add to overall hormonal load
๐งด 4. Triclosan
Found in: antibacterial soaps, toothpaste (less common now but still around)
๐ Can interfere with thyroid hormones
๐พ 5. Pesticides (e.g. Glyphosate, DDT)
Found in: non-organic produce, agriculture
๐ Known to:
Disrupt estrogen and androgen systems
Affect nervous system too
๐งฝ 6. Dioxins
Byproducts of industrial processes, waste burning and in animal products
๐ Extremely potent:
Affect reproductive + immune systems
๐ 7. PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls)
Banned but still persist in environment (especially in fatty fish)
๐ Long-lasting in the body = slow hormonal chaos over time
๐ฅ 8. Flame Retardants (PBDEs)
Found in: furniture, mattresses, electronics
๐ Linked to:
Thyroid disruption
Neurodevelopment issues
๐ณ 9. PFAS (โForever Chemicalsโ)
Found in: non-stick cookware, waterproof fabrics, food packaging
๐These stay in the body for years
๐งด 10. Heavy Metals
Examples: lead, mercury, cadmium
๐ Can interfere with:
Hormone production
Nervous system signalling
๐ฌ๏ธ 11. Air Pollution Compounds
Found in: vehicle emissions, industrial pollution
๐ Linked to:
Cortisol imbalance
Reproductive hormone disruption
๐ฟ What to do now?
Most of these things you can easily swap for non toxic alternatives. Reduce the toxic load from your life, support your body, and let it find its way back to balance
๐ฅThe Yuka app is really helpful. You scan the barcode of things (food, toiletries) and it'll tell you how toxic it is!
