Calling all BME Academics in the UK
When I first established the Bionics Bus, it was in response to a gap I saw across UK research and public engagement: brilliant biomedical engineering and digital‑health science was being developed in universities, but rarely reaching the communities who could benefit from it. The Bus grew out of that unmet need, and out of my own passion for making biomedical engineering accessible, hands‑on, and genuinely exciting for the public. What started as a way to inspire young people has evolved into a mobile platform for community‑embedded science, real‑world testing, and inclusive engagement.
As UK funders continue to emphasise meaningful engagement and real‑world impact, the Bionics Bus provides a unique opportunity for academics to take their research directly into communities. Beyond inspiring young people in STEM, the Bus supports community‑based field testing, participatory research, and technology engagement with groups who stand to benefit from innovation. If you’re preparing a grant and need credible, mobile outreach or community‑embedded evaluation, the Bionics Bus can be written in as a co‑applicant or subcontracted delivery partner. It’s a proven way to strengthen the translational and engagement case for your proposal.
