Most people think an ADHD or autism assessment is about answering one question:
“Do I meet the criteria?”

But what if the most valuable question is:
“What does this mean for me?”
💛

Tomorrow, I’ll be hosting a free live session called Beyond The Label, where we’ll be exploring some of the experiences, challenges, strengths, and support needs that don’t always fit neatly into the diagnostic criteria.

Whether you’re diagnosed, questioning, or currently on a waitlist, you’re very welcome to join us.

Last week, I shared some of the experiences that many neurodivergent people describe but that aren’t actually part of the diagnostic criteria.

Sleep difficulties.
Burnout.
Rejection sensitivity.
Gut problems.
Anxiety.

And one of the most common responses was:
💬 “Nobody ever told me that.”

For many people, diagnosis isn’t the end of the journey.
It’s the beginning.
Because once you have an answer, new questions often appear.

Why have I always felt different?
Why have some environments felt so draining?
Why have I carried labels that never felt quite right?
Why have I spent years trying to fit into spaces that weren’t designed with brains like mine in mind?

The most powerful shift isn’t always receiving a diagnosis.

It’s beginning to understand yourself through a different lens.

Your patterns.
Your strengths.
Your challenges.
Your needs.
Your story.

Because a diagnosis can tell us what.
But understanding helps explain why.

💛 If you could go back and tell your younger self one thing about the way your brain works, what would it be?
If you’re diagnosed, questioning, or currently on a waitlist, I’m running a free live session on Thursday called Beyond The Label where we’ll be exploring exactly this journey of understanding ourselves beyond symptoms, stereotypes, and diagnostic criteria. https://thebrightcentre.com/beyond-the-label-june-25/

Last week, I shared a video about some of the experiences that many neurodivergent people describe but that aren’t actually part of the diagnostic criteria.

Things like:
• sleep difficulties
• burnout
• rejection sensitivity
• anxiety
• gut problems
• hypermobility

The response was incredible.
And it highlighted something important.
If symptoms don’t tell the whole story...
What does?

Because whilst a diagnosis can be life-changing, it doesn’t always explain why.

Why you’ve spent years feeling different.
Why certain environments drain you.
Why some relationships feel harder than they seem to for other people.
Why you’ve carried labels like lazy, too sensitive, difficult, or not living up to your potential.

For many people, the biggest shift isn’t receiving a diagnosis.

It’s beginning to understand themselves.
Their patterns.
Their strengths.
Their challenges.
Their needs.
Their story.

Because a diagnosis can tell us what.
But understanding helps explain why.

💛 What is something you understand about yourself now that you wish you’d understood years ago?

One of the reasons so many people don’t recognise themselves in ADHD or autism straight away is because they aren’t looking for the things they’re actually experiencing.

They’re looking for the stereotypes.

The hyperactive child.
The socially awkward person.
The inability to focus.

What they’re often not looking for is:
• years of poor sleep
• feeling overwhelmed by criticism
• chronic burnout
• anxiety that never seems to switch off
• digestive issues
• feeling exhausted by everyday life

Many of these experiences aren’t part of the diagnostic criteria.

But they are frequently discussed within the neurodivergent community and increasingly recognised within research.

This is why understanding neurodivergence can be so much more complex than simply reading a list of symptoms.

Sometimes people don’t see themselves in the criteria.
They see themselves in the lived experience.

💬 What was the first experience that made you stop and think, “There might be more going on here than I realised”?

What if some of the most impactful parts of ADHD and autism aren’t actually listed in the diagnostic criteria?

When people think about neurodivergence, they often think about the symptoms used to make a diagnosis.

The boxes.
The traits.
The assessment criteria.

And those things matter.

But they don’t always capture the experiences that people struggle with most.

The feeling of constantly being behind.

The guilt when you’re resting.

The exhaustion after a “good” day.

The loneliness of feeling different, even when you’re surrounded by people.

The years spent wondering why things seem harder than they look for everyone else.

Many of these experiences aren’t diagnostic criteria.

Yet they shape daily life in profound ways.

This week, I want to explore some of the symptoms, experiences, and nuances that don’t always make it into assessment manuals—but that many neurodivergent people recognise instantly.

Because symptoms are often just the beginning of the story.

💛 What’s something you’ve experienced that isn’t often talked about when people discuss ADHD or autism?

Some of the smartest, most capable people I know are struggling at university right now.

Not because they aren’t intelligent.
Not because they don’t care.
And not because they’re lazy.

But because university often relies heavily on:

executive function
self-management
nervous-system capacity
consistency under pressure

…and for many ADHD, autistic and AuDHD students, those systems are already overloaded.

I also see this in adults returning to education later in life:

Masters degrees
career changes
professional qualifications
workplace training

People who suddenly start wondering:

“Why does this feel so much harder for me than everyone else?”

Tonight at 8pm, Dr Samuel Landau and I are hosting a free live session about:
🧠 burnout and overwhelm in education
🧠 executive function and focus
🧠 why common study advice often doesn’t help
🧠 what support and adjustments may actually help

And honestly… for a lot of people, this session isn’t just about university.

It’s about finally understanding themselves. 💛
