I spent over 20 years working with children before I ever set foot in a university lecture room.😅
I'd seen it with my own eyes, over and over again — how children are impacted by their environment, by the way they are parented, and how the adults, even siblings around them, interact.
It is all key to a child's well-being and behaviour. 😯
But I wanted to understand the WHY. The theory behind what I was already seeing. So in 2001, I went and studied for my psychology degree.
And that's when something unexpected happened.
It stopped being just about other children — and became more about me. 🥹
About how my own environment had shaped my life. What I needed to learn, change, and heal in myself, so that I could best show up for the families I work with.
Along the way, the language used may have changed.
Neurodivergent. Trauma-informed. Gentle parenting. These words have become part of everyday conversation, and the internet has helped so many of us become more informed.
But the WHY behind it all? That hasn't changed.👩
Every family I work with at Child Behaviour Direct goes through a full assessment. And what I find, time and time again, is an alarming amount of stress these children have.
So that's always where we start.
Not the behaviour itself, but what's underneath it.
The root cause.
The stress a child is holding that they simply can't put into words.
When we reduce that stress first, and communicate with warmth, compassion and love, children stop reacting, and start responding.
That's when real change happens.
That's not a new idea. That's just good practice. 💙
