🌈If you’re lucky enough to have early years SEND support in your area, that’s amazing! ✨
Sadly this isn’t the case for everyone, although the National Portage Association (NPA) are currently working on a campaign to try to change this.

🌈This is where independent services can help to “bridge the gap”.

🌈If you already receive support from NHS and Local Authority services but would like additional intervention from independent practitioners too, that’s also fine.
Just because you are receiving support already, it doesn’t mean you can’t access more from independent practitioners.

🌈At SENDsational Learning I welcome multidisciplinary working with all professionals already involved with a child’s care.
I love working with Physios, Speech & Language Therapists, OT’s and Local Authority services such as Portage Teams, Nurseries and School to support my children and families. ✨

💭Services shouldn’t be, “stand alone islands of support”. We should be all be working together to give children the best chance at achieving their full potential.

🌈To the teams who often liaise with me, thank you for being SENDsational.✨

🌈Rewind to this time last week & take a peep 👀 at a SENDsational Sunday, spent with families at the…

✨First ReNU Syndrome UK Family Conference Day✨

🌈ReNU Syndrome is a recently identified genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, first reported in 2024.

🌈The charity was founded by parents/caregivers and aims to:
Provide support, connection & information to families.
Raise awareness amongst schools, professionals and healthcare providers.

🌈The day provided opportunities for networking between parents & professionals.
✨We heard stories from families about their journey to diagnosis
✨The Geneticists who were involved in discovering the syndrome gave a talk and were there to offer support & answer questions.
✨I shared lots of activity ideas to support communication and learning through practical activities and had discussions with parents around early intervention & the Portage principles.

🌈All in all, it was a wonderful day with SO many families attending (at one point I thought we might need a bigger parachute & waterhole 💦 IYKYK 😉).

🌈The day really did bring meaning to the phrase…
“Together we can make a difference”✨

🌈PLAY SHOULDN’T BE A LUXURY.

🌈Every child has the right to play and should be given equal opportunities to do so, in their own way, in their own time.

🌈Play can look different for many learners however this is even more apparent for our little ones with complex needs.
For children whose motor skills are limited and those who are living with sensory impairments, their world can easily become very small, if we let it.

🌈It’s important parents and caregivers are equipped with knowledge & information around how to support exploration skills, play & learning for these children.

🌈Supporting learners who have complex needs is a specialist area of interest for me, which led me to completing advanced training in the field.

🌈Here are my most used & favoured resources when supporting these wonderful children. I hope you find them as useful as I do.

🌈If you know a family or setting that would benefit from knowing about these activities & programmes, please be kind enough to share the information with them so their little learner can join in the FUN, PLAY and LEARN from their experiences.

🌈WHAT TWO PEOPLE SEE HERE MAY DIFFER HUGELY (🔊SOUND ON).

To the untrained eye this may just look like a little one simply playing around with switches, when actually it’s so much more.

🌈Experienced practitioners will know how to get the “best” out of little learners. They’ll know how to…

✨Adapt activities accordingly.
✨Play to a little learners strengths whilst supporting areas of need.
✨Provide the right amount of “scaffolding” to ensure success for every child.
✨Know when to and how to extend activities.
✨Know how to observe, wait & listen appropriately.

🌈Know your Practitioners, it’s always okay to ask questions around experience & interventions, I can assure you no experienced practitioner will mind.
Sharing information on strategies provides parent/carers with the skills to follow up work at home too, helping to further their child’s progress.

🌈 Therapy is so much more than “just playing”, it’s important we get it right. ✨

🌈WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THERAPY

🌈A SENDsational therapy session follows a relaxed, no pressure approach to learning.
Sessions are never rushed, they are always child led and are based around what motivates a little learner the most.
Early learning goals to support communication and development are always worked on using a number of evidenced based interventions.
Regular therapy helps to build a strong bonds between practitioners & children/families. Working together in this way allows for parent coaching and carry over from families outside of sessions.

🌈FREQUENCY OF SESSIONS
Sessions vary & are arranged according to the individual needs of children & families.
This may look like:

Intensive sessions - Twice a week
Weekly Sessions
Monthly Sessions
Online Therapy/Parent Coaching

What I can say is SENDsational therapy sessions are always delivered using a multisensory approach in a fun way, guaranteed to bring smiles & learning to every session!

🌈M A Y ☀️

You were full of sunshine and lots of giggles✨.

With it being a short half term, I had a lovely time catching up with my “school age” little learners again last week.
Always great to catch up with parents in clinic too, school visits are great but you can’t beat regularly checking in with parents, as the saying goes…
“Teamwork makes the dream work” 😉.

We’ve been super busy in sessions this month working hard on our targets. Lots of steady progress from my little learners and some happy, proud parents which always makes me smile. 🥰

It’s been lovely chatting to some new families this month too, I can’t wait to welcome you to clinic soon to join in the SENDsational fun.

🌈Whatever May looked like for you, I hope it was full of life’s little wins.
Now, let’s see what June has in store for us all. ✨

🌈It’s never “too early” to start working on a little one’s learning & development. Research shows early intervention is key when it comes to child development.

When we invest early, not only do we improve developmental outcomes for children with SEND,
we help to strengthen families by empowering parents. We support inclusion within early years settings, helping to lay foundations for learning and development in the future.
So many benefits come from having practical support and intervention from professionals in the Early Years.

🌈Together we can make a difference to all children’s learning. ✨

🌈If you’re interested in working with SENDsational Learning, contact us today to arrange a free telephone consultation. A warm welcome awaits. ✨

🚀BLAST - Boosting Language Auditory Skills & Talking.
🚀A speech, language & communication programme written by Speech & Language Therapist, Nikki Joyce.

🚀The BLAST programme is something which I regularly recommend to the settings I work with.
It’s fully inclusive and something all children can get involved with.
The programme has been proven to support the development of children’s speech, language & communication skills.

🚀With just a few adjustments, every activity can be pitched at the right level for every little learner.

🚀This is exactly what inclusive practice should look like.

🚀The programme is designed for three year olds however it can be used with older children who have SEND.
The easy to follow plans are loved by nurseries/schools and the activities are a huge hit with my little learners.

🚀BLAST 2 is also available for older children & focuses on underpinning skills for reading focusing on phonological awareness.

🚀Full details of both programmes can be found on the BLAST website www.blastprogramme.co.uk (🔗link in stories).
