We’re pleased to share that Andrew Clements will be speaking at this year’s APS Design Week on behalf of The Safety Department.

“Design vs Reality – Why Compliant Design Still Fails in Practice”
📅 1 July 2026 | 12:00–13:00 (online)

This webinar explores a challenge we see across the industry every day the gap between compliant design and real-world outcomes. Too often, meeting regulations is assumed to guarantee safe, buildable results. In practice, that’s not always the case!

As part of a wider programme focused on real-world design challenges, APS Design Week brings together industry professionals to share practical insight and improve competence across CDM and building safety roles

If you’re involved in design, project delivery or Principal Designer roles, this is a session worth attending.

“Good health and safety is invisible.” - Our job is to be invisible??

It’s a phrase we often come back to because when it’s done properly and we are able to offer our clients expert support, things simply run as they should. No disruption, no drama, just well-managed, well-delivered projects.

Done right, it becomes part of the culture, not an obstacle.

We are pleased to welcome Anupa!

Anupa joins us as a Chartered Architect with experience across residential, industrial, healthcare and education projects.

She brings strong design coordination experience, practical site knowledge and a clear understanding of how information needs to be managed between clients, consultants, contractors and Building Control.

Anupa has also completed RIBA Principal Designer training under the Building Regulations and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM), which makes her a strong addition to our growing Principal Designer team.

Her architectural background strengthens our ability to support clients with clear, practical and joined-up Principal Designer services under both CDM and the Building Regulations.

Welcome to the team!

Health & safety site inspections shouldn’t feel like a tick-box exercise. They’re an opportunity to have the right conversations, spot things early, and support the people delivering the work every day.

This is where Chesney really adds value! 👷‍♂️

His approach is simple work with site teams, understand how things are actually being done, and offer practical, realistic input that helps keep standards high without getting in the way of progress.

Looking back at the Health and Safety Transformed for a Multinational Shipyard! Working alongside the owners of a large multinational shipyard, we supported a step change in how health & safety was approached and delivered across the operation.

✅ Modernised Health & Safety Protocols
✅ Enhanced Operational Efficiency
✅ Improved Infrastructure

This collaboration resulted in a significant transformation of safety standards and operational workflows, which ultimately led to a safer, more productive workplace. The shipyard is now well-positioned for future success in a competitive and dynamic industry

Are you managing risk… or designing it out?

Most construction risk is locked in at the design stage yet “principal design” is still treated like a box-ticking review. Too often it’s:

• Drawings issued
• Risks noted
• Comments logged

That’s not designing out risk it’s managing it after the fact. We see it everywhere:

• Fire strategies that comply but complicate escape
• Ventilation added late instead of influencing layout
• Structural decisions driven by cost/programme, not safety

This is compliance thinking and it misses the point. Approved Documents guide us, but they don’t guarantee safe outcomes. True principal design should:

• Challenge the brief
• Shape layouts early
• Eliminate hazards before they reach site

If safety relies on RAMS, the design hasn’t done its job it’s just passed risk downstream!

Dust control! Silica dust is a real challenge many sites still face...

It’s not just about compliance, it’s about protecting long-term health. It’s rarely a single fix it’s about having the right systems, communication, and behaviours in place.

We’re supporting clients by tightening briefs, clarifying responsibilities, and ensuring dust management is properly embedded from the start. We’ll also be exploring this further in our new podcast “Safe to Say” breaking down roles and responsibilities under CDM.

If you’re unsure where you stand, we’re offering a free, no obligation conversation to help.

Is construction quietly picking up?

Despite the noise, one signal stands out: enquiries are rising. At The Safety Department we’re seeing:

• Earlier conversations
• Better‑quality enquiries
• More focus on design risk
• Increased demand for Principal Designer support

This isn’t a spike it’s a shift. Clients are engaging earlier, with more awareness of duty holder responsibilities and less willingness to defer decisions. That’s not just growth, it’s a change in mindset!

The real question:
Will these early signals turn into committed projects?

We need your help!

Our managing director Laurence has built a short survey to support an upcoming (Chartered Institute of Building) panel discussion and we’re keen to gather as many industry perspectives as possible. If you work in, alongside, or have an interest in the built environment, we would really appreciate you taking a couple of minutes to complete it:
