The early bird wins.

While returning to my cruise ship in Bridgetown, Barbados, I noticed thousands of people were only just beginning their day.

By then, I had already explored, experienced and achieved more before the crowds arrived.

There’s a valuable business lesson here:

Starting earlier gives you more time to think, learn, prepare and act before opportunities become crowded.

If you see someone without a smile… give them one of yours. 😊

That’s the simple message in today’s short video.

I recorded this while walking in beautiful St Lucia, and yes, I had to keep half an eye on the rocks as well as the camera!

But the thought is an important one.

Not everyone you smile at will smile back.

Not everyone you ask “How are you?” will give you a bright answer.

And that’s okay.

Because we never truly know what someone else is carrying.

A smile may seem like a small thing. Yet sometimes, it can be the very thing that helps someone feel seen, lifted, or reminded that life still has light in it.

I’ve had low moments myself, and I know how powerful a genuine smile can be in helping us move through the storm and back towards the sunshine.

So today, make a little extra effort.

Smile first.

Be kind first.

And when you see someone without a smile…

Give them one of yours.

When asked how they feel about the UK's future, people scored -50% net optimism.

About their own personal life? +38%.

That gap says almost everything about where we are right now.

I've recently been at the Professional Adviser Northern Group, and one set of figures stopped me in my tracks. Across thousands of people surveyed in 2024 and 2025, optimism about personal life sat at +38%, optimism about the local area at just +9%, and optimism about the country as a whole at -50%.

So why aren't people as happy as they used to be? And more importantly, what can you actually do about it?
