We’re incredibly proud to share that Somerset’s self-referral for breast cancer diagnosis pathway has won the Digital Innovation Award at the first ever NHS Excellence Awards! 🌟

Launched in January 2025, this was the first service of its kind in England, allowing people with concerning symptoms to access a breast diagnostic clinic directly through NHS 111 online, without needing a GP appointment.

Since then, 1,474 people have used the service, helping speed up diagnosis, reduce pressure on GP services and, most importantly, ensure people get the care they need sooner. Of those, 78 people have been diagnosed with cancer, highlighting the vital role this pathway plays in early detection and patient safety.

This award recognises the dedication, innovation and impact of teams across Somerset who continue to improve care for our communities.

A huge congratulations to this amazing team 💙

Early detection doesn’t just change outcomes — it saves lives 💙
When cancer is found early, treatment is often more effective, less invasive, and survival rates are significantly higher. It can mean more time, more options, and more moments that matter. That’s why screening, awareness, and listening to your body are so important — because catching something early can truly make all the difference.
Think of it this way: if 78 people were on a bus, around 65 of them would survive cancer when it’s detected early. That’s the power of early action. But when it’s found late, those chances can drop dramatically.
So book that appointment. Check that symptom. Attend your screening. Encourage your loved ones to do the same.
Don’t wait for a sign that can’t be ignored — your health is worth acting on today.

If you’re registered as female with your GP 👩⚕️You will be automatically invited to breast screening when you reach 50 📅

If you’ve not been sent a letter 📩 Contact your local breast screening service if you’ve not been invited for breast screening by the time you’re 53 and you think you should have been 📞 You should also contact them if it’s been more than 3 years since your last appointment and you think you’re overdue ⏳

If you’re registered as male with your GP 👨⚕️Currently you will not be automatically invited for breast screening ❗If you’ve not had top surgery/bilateral mastectomy and would like to take part in screening, then you can organise your mammogram by visiting your GP or by booking an appointment with a breast cancer screening service 🏥

If you have no symptoms and it has been more than three years since your last screening, you can contact your GP or local NHS breast screening service to book an appointment 📞✅

1 in 36 women in the UK will develop womb cancer in their lifetime.
Let that sink in. This isn’t rare. It’s happening to women we know and love — our mothers, sisters, colleagues, and friends.

Womb cancer is often highly treatable when caught early, yet too many women don’t realise what symptoms to look out for or feel unsure about seeking help. Changes like abnormal bleeding (especially after menopause), pelvic pain, or unusual discharge should never be ignored.

Your body knows when something isn’t right — and you deserve to be heard. No concern is ever “too small” when it comes to your health. Speaking up could save your life.

Let’s break the silence, raise awareness, and support each other to seek help sooner. Early diagnosis saves lives. 💛

Screening can help detect cancer early, when treatment is often more successful 💙 In some cases, it can even prevent cancer from developing altogether ✨

We know that transgender and non-binary people may face additional barriers to attending screening. This can include not receiving invitations, uncertainty about eligibility, or experiences of gender dysphoria 🌿

Everyone deserves the information, support, and choice to take part in screening ✅
