Getting young people outside and engaged can be a challenge.

But after telling them about Ten Tors Challenge | Dartmoor and explaining that 3 miles isn’t exactly an expedition to the North Pole, they somehow find the motivation and usually end up loving it! 😆

Out on the moor alone the other evening, when I found my path completely blocked by a herd of cows and their calves, all giving me the stare.

I’ll be honest, I have a healthy fear of cows, and it took me a good while hacking through the bracken to find a way around! But it got me thinking about how many visitors encounter exactly this on Dartmoor and whether they’d know what to do. Swipe through for everything you need to know to stay safe around cattle on the moor.

Vixen Tor - what you need to know.

If Vixen Tor is on your Dartmoor bucket list, it’s worth knowing a little history before you go.

Since 2003, public access was removed and it’s become one of Dartmoor’s most talked-about access stories.

The tor sits at the heart of the “access island” problem - land where the public technically has the right to roam, but no legal right to reach without crossing privately owned ground.

It’s a quirk of England’s access legislation that many people don’t know exists and Vixen Tor is probably the most famous example of it on the moor.

During my walks, I cover many aspects of land access including the history, present day and possible futures.

With an experienced guide, you get the bigger picture of Dartmoor.

Loved teaming up with the wonderful to guide the Cornish contingent of the U3A in exploring the archaeology of Dartmoor. I also came away enriched by their collective wisdom, particularly their insights into dowsing and their perspectives on the history of the stone rows and kists at Merrivale.
