Tonight, 3rd September, the waning gibbous Moon passes close to the Pleiades, one of the most recognisable star clusters in the night sky.

In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were seven sisters born to the Titan Atlas and the sea nymph Pleione. After the hunter Orion began pursuing them, Zeus transformed the sisters into stars and placed them in the heavens. Orion was later placed among the stars too, and he appears to follow them across the sky forever.

Although they are known as the Seven Sisters, most people can see only six without binoculars. This inspired stories of a missing or hidden sister, though the identity of that sister changes between traditions.

The Pleiades were more than a beautiful sight. Their appearance helped ancient communities recognise changes in the agricultural and sailing seasons. Across different cultures, they became associated with ancestors, divine women, mourning, protection and the turning of the year.

Spiritually, tonight’s meeting can represent sisterhood, guidance and finding your way back to those who understand you. The waning Moon also carries the energy of release, making this a beautiful night to consider which burdens were never yours to carry alone.

Look towards the Moon tonight and allow your eyes time to adjust. The Seven Sisters will be waiting beside her small, ancient and still shining together.
