Away from home.

Missing my dogs 😭😭😭
And I'm missing my garden more than I expected.

As clinical aromatherapists, we're often drawn to the exotic — oils carried from distant lands, each with its own story and mystique. There's something wonderful about that sense of far-flung origin.

But walking through unfamiliar landscape today, a few old friends stopped me in my tracks: pine, rosemary, lavender. Growing wild, right where I least expected them.
It was a gentle reminder — we don't always need to look far afield. Sometimes the most grounding, familiar comfort is closer than we think.

"I don't like rose"

I get it.

Because what most people have experienced is "rose-scented" — synthetic fragrance.

"Rose Otto" is one of the most expensive oils on the market. The labour involved, the yield, the care — it all shows up in the price tag.

And in the aroma.

As a clinical aromatherapist, I'm trained to recognise "Rose Otto" by both aroma, and chemistry.

One compound naturally present in Rose Otto is methyl eugenol. At certain levels, we need to be mindful of this. This isn't about fear. It's about knowledge.

Never confuse a synthetic copy for the real thing. The aroma isn't the same, the chemistry (and safety), isn't the same, and neither will the therapeutic effects be the same.

And if you ever get a chance to have a sniff of a high quality, organic "Rose Otto", do it....because that aroma? It might just change your mind.

🌿 What's a Physic Garden? A Pharmacist & Clinical Aromatherapist's Take

Long before pharmacy chains and synthetic drugs, there were physic gardens — plots of land where medicinal plants were grown with intention and respect. "Physic" is an old word for healing, and these gardens were the original pharmacies.

As a pharmacist, I know the chemistry behind plant medicine — the alkaloids, glycosides, and volatile oils that modern drugs are built from. As a clinical aromatherapist, I know these same compounds work differently when it's not just the isolated molecule.

A physic garden isn't a quaint throwback. It's a living library of therapeutic potential.

But here's the part that matters most: **these plants demand respect.** The same plant that soothes can also irritate. The same oil that supports can also interfere. A physic garden isn't a free-for-all — it's a reminder that knowledge, dosage, and safety matter whether you're reaching for a prescription bottle or a tincture bottle.

Medicine and holistic care are converging. A physic garden sits right at that intersection — and it asks us to bring both reverence and rigor to the table.

✨ Processing matters — delicate oils can be rendered useless by incorrect production, just because it says "borage oil" on the label....doesn't mean it's useful.

Apologies for going quiet recently — small matter of a looming evacuation round here. 🙃
For now, we're still home, and the garden's still standing — lavender and all. How apt: the plant everyone reaches for to calm down, growing right outside the door during a testing time!
Sometimes, the most useful thing to do really is just stepping outside and breathing it in.
