Can we actually eat a diet that stops us ageing? The simple answer is no but there are foods that we can eat less of or avoid that can help improve our skin health. It's probably foods we already know are good for us but go to my blog to read the evidence behind it!

I’m not sure where the UV maxing term first got put forward but it is dangerous. It is misinterpreting the UV index, which is there to help people know when to employ sun protection measures, and instead is exploited for maximising tanning potential.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and are free to do as they wish with regards to their own health, but please do not promote frankly skin-cancer inducing habits as anything but that.

We get samples from various cosmeceutical companies of products that help support the skin barrier whilst we treat the underlying skin problem with active, prescription agents.

I met with Deanna our local rep yesterday who brought some samples for our patients. Effaclar is their anti acne range which contains zinc. Cicaplast is their repairing balm which we commonly recommend for patients on topical or oral retinoids such as isotretinoin.

Lipikar is their gentle eczema wash which can be used on babies from birth.

Their UVmune 400 range is a fantastic broad spectrum sunscreen. This is their oil control version for oily skin, CeraVe blemish control is a salicylic acid wash which also contains niacinamide and ceramides to soothe the skin.

The anti dark spot sunscreen contains Melasyl which captures melanin precursors so can help in the management of pigmentation.

Lastly their UVair is their ultralight weight, hydrating, broad spectrum sunscreen.

Lucky patients!

Not a paid ad, free, gifted samples for patients seen in clinic with relevant skin conditions.

As a Consultant Dermatologist, seeing the volume of sun damaged skin, precancerous and cancerous skin lesions in clinic, I can’t see any good reason to not use sunscreen.

I do understand there is a lot of negative spin about sunscreens which seems to have been perpetuated by social media. Dr Michelle Wong has a PhD in Chemistry and does an incredible amount of work dispelling myths about cosmetics and sunscreens. Go to her IG page or webpage to learn more. She has taught me an awful lot about the science behind sunscreens!

But at the end of the day, I’m not your mum so you can do as you please. But we do know for sure that premature aging, precancerous and cancerous skin lesions are all directly related to the amount of UV your skin has been exposed to in your lifetime. You can’t turn back the clock but you can change things for the better in the future. Otherwise you’ll end up seeing someone like me for the rest of your life 😖

At any medical conference, all speakers have to declare if they have any competing conflicts of interest pertaining to the subject they are talking about . This means that they need to declare if they have received money or benefitted financially from the topic they are discussing.

It is tempting to say that a doctor who is funded such a way must therefore have bias and there are certainly studies confirming this. But there is nuance to it too.

Many doctors receive funding from pharmaceutical or cosmeceutical companies to do clinical trials and research, speak at or attend meetings, myself included. Some doctors will be approached to use their expertise to develop new drugs or cosmetics.

The time when you should worry is when a doctor is practising outside of their field of specialism or is promoting one product, cream or device only. There needs to be active discussion of the pros and cons of any treatment and alternatives need to be offered.

Before you make a decision, do your research. See if the only studies into said product are by the doctor or company marketing the product and do not solely rely on social media.

I've just started on a Diploma on something called the Exposome and the Skin, thing we weren't really educated about at medical school. Lots of fascinating things have been taught but I thought what was really interesting was how your diet can affect your response to skin cancer therapy.
