Look what I found out hanging out in one of my outdoor worm colony compost heaps. When you spend as much time as I do with composting systems you start to realise the amount of life around it. From the robin eating seed and worms (I forgive them) Yes Birds are part of the soil food web as well.
What this little aphid predator was doing I have no clue. But they always make me smile.
Peace out everyone. Hopefully this stupid wet winter is starting to fade away.

This Apple tree was out of control. So the decision was made to hack it back. Them decide its fate. To go or to bonzai-ed. The owner is open to grafting on some other varieties to make an heirloom tree. In the meantime a massive pile of debris to be sorted. Well seasoned Apple wood is valuable and the twigs will go for bio-char. Decisions to be made.

A reminder. Even windfall apples are not waste. Your garden birds will munch on them. And passing through their digestive track you will get a fantastic fertiliser spread around your garden. All part of natures nutrient cycling system.

I am creating a living screen to hide one of my compost stations. Using last year's compost I am hoping it will flourish. I have some willow saplings ready. Am eying up some Hazel to root. This is today's bounty to seed & see what happens. Hawthorne, rose hips, cardoon seeds, crab apple & gorse seeds. More to come including a tour of this composting station. Peace out soil makers.

This experiment is being documented on instagram. It is a cold composting small bin. Trying to compost a lot of brambles. Many of the sods have sprouted in the bin. We turned and broke off the shoots. But initial conclusions are suggesting hot composting may be better for dealing with such an invasive plant as brambles. But for the other materiald we put in there. and the smaller bits of brambles. Just look at the colour. Mixed results and lot learnt.
